I pay pretty close attention but some of these studies were new to me. Interestingly, Kennedy never once mentioned privacy and data security.
He repeatedly returned to vaccines. At the CDC, officials are using the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) to compare outcomes in healthcare for vaccinated and unvaccinated people, as well as examining the role of aluminum adjuvants in vaccines; the timing of the hepatitis B vaccine in infancy; comparing live and attenuated vaccines; and studying influenza, Covid and HPV vaccines in children, Kennedy said.

Using Medicaid and “linked real-world data”, officials are also studying vaccination during pregnancy and subsequent childhood outcomes. FDA researchers are using the Biologics Effectiveness and Safety (Best) System and Medicare data to “replicate and expand previous studies” on vaccinated and unvaccinated populations, aluminum and asthma, and maternal influenza vaccines and autism spectrum disorder, he said.

Pennsylvania just announced the fourth death from measles this year. All patients were unvaccinated. This is so sad.
Pennsylvania Department of Health Confirms Two Additional Measles-Associated Deaths

Pennsylvania Department of Health has recorded four measles-associated deaths in 2026.

Getting vaccinated remains the best protection against measles, providing 97% lifetime protection after two doses.

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) today confirmed two additional measles-associated deaths in Pennsylvania. Both individuals were unvaccinated. One individual lived in Jefferson County and the other lived in Mifflin County.

To protect the privacy of both individuals and their families, DOH will not be releasing any additional details that could personally identify them. While local officials in the respective counties where the deaths occurred may release more details about the deceased, DOH is bound by different laws that strictly limit what it can share publicly. The two additional deaths will be added to DOH’s measles dashboard Wednesday, as part of the regular update.

The best protection against measles remains getting fully vaccinated. The MMR vaccine, administered over two doses, boosts a person’s immune system and provides 97% lifetime protection.

I love the chicken beat
Over the decades, officials have tried new things and learned what works best. For the first few years of the Delaware program, they used white leghorn chickens – but they proved, in Moran’s words, to be “very flighty”. They frequently tried to escape, running into the bushes and forests.

“It’s literally like a scene from Rocky, where you’re chasing the chicken around – you can’t catch these things,” Moran said. It would sometimes take an hour to track the chickens down. Once they switched to a breed of Rhode Island red chickens, their work went much more smoothly.

"...he has also been able to use taxpayer funds to create a sprawling network..." "The mayor's office says that it does not pay the influencers." I am kind of shocked that this hasn't been corrected yet. Is he or isn't he using taxpayer funds for this?
But as mayor, he has also been able to use taxpayer funds to create a sprawling network of hundreds of friendly influencers to boost his priorities, provide positive depictions of his administration and enhance his popularity. The mayor’s office says that it does not pay the influencers. Still, their proximity and access to a figure as popular as Mr. Mamdani can help increase their own social media following and, by extension, potentially put them in a position to attract paid content sponsorships from commercial brands. Some influencers said that when they feature Mr. Mamdani, the videos get more likes, and viewers watch longer.

I don't know what I expected from the person who earlier argued that Kennedy has some really good ideas but
Mr. Parsons, Mr. Kennedy and a host of Kennedy supporters seized on these details to suggest that the state’s initial statements were misleading. And, indeed, they might have been — at a minimum, they were premature, and the apparent lack of coordination between the coroner’s office and state officials left room for doubt. The governor’s claim that the deaths were “completely preventable” was perhaps too definitive. And referring to the infant as an “unvaccinated individual,” without the context that a baby would not have been eligible for vaccination, could be seen as disingenuous and in service of an agenda to scare and shame people who are hesitant about vaccines.

The FDA is finally initiating an inspection of Taylor Farms facilities in Mexico. It's possible the contamination there is ongoing -- but it's also possible, this late in the game, that they will find no traces of cyclospora, which is difficult to detect in produce anyway.
August 13, 2026

The FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, are investigating a multistate outbreak of Cyclospora infections linked to iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico and recalled by Taylor Farms de Mexico.

Since the last update on August 5, 2026, state and local health officials have continued to interview additional cases of cyclosporiasis and CDC has added them to this multistate outbreak. The outbreak includes people who reported exposure to processed iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico served or purchased at various locations, including people who previously reported eating at Taco Bell. Most of these illnesses began before the Taylor Farms de Mexico iceberg lettuce recall on July 17, 2026. The total case count associated with this multistate outbreak is now 9,481 illnesses reported from 17 states. Since the last update, 2 additional states have been added: Maine and Massachusetts.

FDA has initiated an onsite inspection and sampling at Taylor Farms de Mexico in coordination with Mexican officials. FDA remains confident that all recalled iceberg lettuce related to this specific Cyclospora outbreak is off the market. FDA will continue to work with federal and state partners to investigate this multistate outbreak.

This is where the individualization of health leads. But "individual choice" obscures the network underpinning our abilities to make those choices. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
With cyclospora, washing doesn’t really help that much, unlike E coli or salmonella. “So we are relying on the regulatory and public health system to protect us,” Sharfstein said.

“You could call it the explosive diarrhea rule,” he added. “When you’re not having explosive diarrhea, you don’t realize that the regulatory and public health systems are protecting you. When you do have explosive diarrhea, you’re like, ‘What’s going wrong? And we need to invest in systems to keep us from getting exposed to diarrhea.’”

We talk a lot about declining trust in the health system. This has the potential to do so much damage. Like food (ahem: lettuce?), Americans believe that if it's available, it's safe. That's a beautiful trust that is easy to break and very very hard to repair.
Consumers, in the meantime, will be sold a story of peptide success in which the truth will be hard to suss out. They will see slickly produced ads on television, or conversations on podcasts, that push miracle cures. Many probably won’t realize that what is commonly assumed to be one of the last remaining maxims of the US healthcare industry – that a drug prescribed by a doctor has been deemed safe and effective – won’t necessarily be true. And without mandatory preliminary inspections of compounding pharmacies, the dangerous and even sometimes deadly errors that have put these pharmacies in the historic spotlight may make headlines again.

This is really good www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...
The committee – whose members include many people with financial ties to the burgeoning peptide industry – recommended, by thin margins, that six of the seven peptides in question be made legally available, and not just for “lab use”.

But this committee didn’t recommend that access be increased by putting the peptides through testing, proving their safety and effectiveness, and subsequently making them available to patients. Instead, they recommended using an in-the-weeds “reclassification” method that would allow the peptides to be legally sold, even before the FDA has proven their safety or benefit.

From @gregggonsalves.bsky.social newrepublic.com/article/1882...
The reality is, most people don’t really understand what public health does. The pandemic increased that sense of uncertainty and misunderstanding, Gonsalves said. “It’s not masking and vaccine mandates. It’s the fact that you don’t get food poisoning when you walk into a restaurant, the water coming out of your tap isn’t filled with lead, your building tiles aren’t filled with asbestos, you don’t have to deal with polio or other childhood infectious diseases.” In order to save public health, we need to understand the countless and almost entirely invisible ways it saves our lives every day.

Melody Schreiber @melodyschreiber.com · 25/07/2026
This is literally what public health already does
There are fights that are strongly supported by both sides, including air quality in neighborhoods sharing zip codes with industrial facilities, lead and toxins in the water kids are drinking, and the poor quality of the food Americans eat and its clear negative impact on our health. These are issues where public health can stand next to communities, name what is harming them, and fight like it means something.

Melody Schreiber @melodyschreiber.com · 25/07/2026
Was it public health who did that? Or was it politicians and opportunists?
When the field was forced out front, as it was during the coronavirus pandemic, many Americans experienced public health not as a shield, but as a scold—speaking in acronyms and waving data-filled reports. In COVID-19’s shadow, trust in essential health agencies including the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration has dropped to all-time lows. Fewer than half of Americans now have confidence in the CDC to carry out its core responsibilities, a nearly 40 percent drop from the start of the pandemic.

Name ONE hit. In what ways has MAHA positively informed public health policy? I very much want to know!
When I sat down with Nancy Fuller, a lifelong Democrat and, more recently, a MAHA supporter, at a Christian coffeehouse in rural Ohio, she told me that what she likes about the movement is its willingness to try. Ever since her son was diagnosed with autism, decades ago, she has wondered whether environmental exposures or maybe vaccines were to blame, and she has spent years watching health institutions dismiss parents like her as ignorant or uninformed. In her view, public health steps up to the plate only when it already knows the outcome. Whether the issue is autism, AI, or something else, MAHA swings at anything and everything. That means more misses—and occasional hits—on issues everyone else had decided were too complicated, too compromised, or too politically inconvenient to touch.

Please help, my family is dying
That assumption is wrong. MAHA is an opportunity, and one the public-health sector—academics, doctors, and leaders of advocacy groups—cannot afford to squander. Yes, MAHA’s anti-vax wing is very loud and litigious. But for many in the MAHA movement, their top issues lie elsewhere

Melody Schreiber @melodyschreiber.com · 25/07/2026
You know what's really useful in these conversations? Data. www.kff.org/public-opini...
Parents who do not support the MAHA movement are nearly twice as likely as MAHA parents to say it is “very” or “somewhat” important for children in their community to be vaccinated for COVID-19 (52% vs. 28%) and 20 percentage points more likely to say it is important for children to be vaccinated for the flu (64% vs. 44%).While most MAHA and non-MAHA parents report confidence in the safety of MMR and polio vaccines, MAHA parents are less likely to be “very” confident.About four in ten MAHA-supporting parents (42%) say the CDC recommends “too many” childhood vaccines, more than twice the share of non-MAHA parents who say the same (17%).

The irony, of course, is that this administration’s health leadership rode in on a wave of Covid criticism and a promise to restore trust in public health. They seem to be finding out just how hard it is to communicate nuance in an emergency — especially when many agency experts have left the building.

Okay here's what I mean -- Michigan officials did not isolate this to Taco Bell www.theguardian.com/society/2026...
In this outbreak, the CDC pointed to a shredded iceberg supplier in Mexico, naming Taco Bell as an affected restaurant without naming the producer, on Friday.

The outbreak probably goes beyond one restaurant chain, Bagdasarian said.

“As we look at where people could have come into contact with this contaminated material, there is no one single place that has jumped out at us,” she said. “It’s more about ‘where did contamination occur upstream?’ – and many of these producers will supply not only restaurants and fast-food chains but also grocery stores.”

The HHS is denying reports that it has stopped its plan to defund hospitals that offer gender-affirming care for children.
Tweet from HHS Rapid Response:

"Claims that HHS has "abandoned" federal rulemaking to establish a condition of participation in Medicare and Medicaid for hospitals are completely inaccurate and unfounded.

The Department has not withdrawn or reversed course on the "Medicare and Medicaid Programs; Hospital Condition of Participation: Prohibiting Sex-Rejecting Procedures for Children" rule. HHS an CMS continue to follow statutory requirements by reviewing comments, and we intend to issue a final rule.

HHS remains committed to protecting children from potentially lifelong, irreversible, and harmful sex‑rejecting interventions."

Media alerts from CDC have become so rare, I was actually shocked to see this
CDC Encourages Americans to Stay Mosquito Bite-Free during America's 250th Independence Day holiday weekend

West Nile virus season starting early, highest number of infections reported at this point in year since 2004.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is seeing the earliest start to the West Nile virus (WNV) season in the United States with the highest number of human disease cases reported by this time of year since 2004. At least 48 cases have been reported as of June 30, 2026: 38 have been cases of severe neuroinvasive disease. Since 2004, an average of 10 human disease cases has been reported to CDC by the end of June. This surge is driven by early circulation of the virus, with 23 states reporting West Nile virus activity – also the highest number recorded over the last 10 years.

With millions of Americans expected to spend time outdoors over the America's 250th Independence Day holiday weekend, CDC recommends taking the following precautions to reduce the risk of mosquito bites:
Use an insect repellent registered with the Environmental Protection Agency.
Wear long, loose-fitting shirts and pants so it is harder for mosquitoes to bite your skin.
