I’m sitting outside the Oakland library in Pittsburgh. I just ate a lamb Kafka sandwich from Ali Baba’s, and I drank an Iced Cherry Chai Latte from Starbucks. The sun is warm on my back and I am rejoicing in this perfect Spring day.

Here are both sides of the sign I’m going to carry at the “Stand Up for Science” protest at Schenley Plaza today at 11:00 am.

Science Saved My Life. The word saved is outlined in purple.

We love scientists. Love is a heart. This sign is on cardboard. There is a large rainbow beneath the words.

Rep. Al Green is a hero. Every single Democrat should have been on their feet following his lead.

I’m creating a little cardboard sign for the Stand Up for Science event this Friday, March 7th. One side will say: Respect Science. The other side will say: We ❤️ Scientists.

Mid way through The Village Library Demon Hunting Society. I thought this would be more found family than it is. Main character is pretty alone after the first act. The last act will make or break this book for me.

So the Republicans want to see Americans get sick and suffer and die? That’s the outcome of stripping Medicaid from people.

If anyone has been thinking about freezing their credit in this uncertain time, I can tell you it’s easy. I had an Experian account already, I created an account with Trans Union and I called Equifax. It took me about half an hour tops. All three are frozen now.

I started reading “The Village Library Demon Hunting Society” by C.M. Waggoner. The first act feels like Murder She Wrote, but with a sense of wrongness. I like the main character and am interested to see where this goes.

I was 7 when my neighbor took me and his daughter to see ET. We sat in the first row and I stared up, up, up. Now, I mostly remember the Reese’s Pieces when I think of ET.

I’m reading an exuberant book of poetry: Razzle Dazzle by Major Jackson. When I want a moment of snappy language, I read one poem. It’s like a tiny vacation.

Razzle Dazzle is written in yellow letters on a black background. Ribbons of blue loop and circle over the entire cover.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my time working at the federal government. For 2 years, I worked with a blind business owner, a soft spoken electrician, a grouch, some very smart and stylish new moms and a person who was so careful about avoiding bribes she wouldn’t accept a sheet of stickers.

I attended the Protest/March in Downtown Pittsburgh at 12:00 today. Nearly everything good about this country is being destroyed by Trump’s government. In the cold weather of this afternoon, I was proud to be with some of the people who are working to keep us ALL alive and free.

Many people hold brightly colored signs. Everyone’s in winter hats.

This is a view from across the street. A whole corner block is taken up by protesters holding signs.

I highly recommend The Maid and the Crocodile by Jordan Ifueko. It’s a fantasy novel that is somehow cozy and political. It has big magic but at the same time it is interested in the value of an ordinary life.

This book cover has on one side a black woman with a crown of flowers and a gold dress on. The other side is the black silhouette of a crocodile. The background is many pastel and light colors.

I finished “The Fire Next Time” by James Baldwin. It’s full of such wisdom. He understood that we are all equal, not better or worse. And he understood how few people were working on equality. I’m so glad I read it.

It’s not too early to think about 2025 elections. Three Democrats are running to retain their seats on the Supreme Court, putting Democrats' 5-2 majority on the line. All three justices — Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty and David Wecht — face a "yes" or "no" vote to win another 10-year term.
