Kernel Hearts is such a seamless combination of Persona and Devil May Cry that it makes me wonder why we didn't try this sooner. It also borrows directly from Nightreign, which I think has been polarizing for some, but in my experience adds a sweet co-operative dynamic that encourages roles and communication. For the efficient team, Kernel Hearts is a real treat.

First I'd like to give props: There is NO AI CONTENT in Kernel Hearts. This is an impactful game, with smooth gameplay, excellent music, good voice acting, pointed character design, solid art, and a compelling world, with a vehemently ANTI-AI team.

Kernel Hearts uses a simplified Social Link system from Persona, allowing you to use materials you find in your runs to bond with NPCs, revealing cutscenes that pull back the curtain on an impressively well-written world and certainly endearing characters. Many of these cutscenes are fully voice acted (Japanese only, for now) by a team that presents a dynamic, ear-catching performance. These cutscenes are also your track to power progression, so don't miss them!

Part 2 of my Kernel Hearts review

The combat of Kernel Hearts is a big selling point. This is not a Soulslike, and it's not a Hades-like either, but rather an Action Platforming Beat-em-up thay is reminiscent of Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. Light and heavy attack combos used in tandem with jump and dash cancels allow for fluid moment-to-moment combat that is easy to use and rewarding to experiment with.

It's worth noting that Kernel Hearts is a DIFFICULT and CO-OPERATIVE game. Much like Nightreign or Ravenswatch, this game CAN be played solo, but is built to be played with a team that can be many places at once when necessary. If you're not playing with friends or you're more interested in a narrative experience, I seriously recommend playing on "Story" difficulty. I promise it's still worth it. My playtime so far has been entirely as a duo on normal difficulty and have had a great time.

Kernel Hearts easily gets an 8/10 from me in its current state. I hope they continue to update it with more buildcrafting, side stories, and characters in the future.
