Plein air practice at Valley Forge Pennsylvania on a gorgeous sunny Sunday. The hawk was being harassed by a little bird, the crickets were chirping, and wind was rustling, and my love and I were enjoying the support and shade of a big oak tree. It was a perfect day. Goauche on water color paper.

I spent some time at Morris Arboretum this afternoon. My subjects were the ancient japanese cherry blossoms and the ephemeral tulips in their shadow. I debated even showing my paintings, which I feel don't do justice to the landscape. Even my off day is still pretty good. Gouache.

As the partner to a scientist whose work depends on government funding, I feel sorrow and disappointment that our government is actively pushing young scientists out of their careers. Hopefully the private sector can be a temporary (if very imperfect) bridge for these brilliant young scientists.

The winter light changes so drastically in the woods throughout the day. The hint of warmth in the morning drastically contrasts with the long shadows of the afternoon. Limited gouache palette: burnt umber, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, cadmium yellow.

I'm inspired by winter leaves. these are holly trees at the Morris arboretum in Philadelphia, and I just love how the snow looks on these tough leaves that can withstand so many temperature and physical hardships. They were really wonderful subjects for an ink and watercolor study.
