This large wren species is a resident songbird found from southwest Mexico to northwestern Costa Rica.
It typically inhabits thorn forests, dry scrubby habitats, and semi-open areas.
The bird has a distinct bright rusty nape patch and boldly barred wings and tail.
It was previously known as the Rufous-naped Wren, but the name was updated to Rufous-backed Wren.
