Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I didn’t actually know it was an anti-Romani slur until years ago when someone told me when I used it—I thought my whole life it was some archaic riff on “ripped” (as in ripped off). Which is to say that stopping the conversation can in fact be doing a speaker with a gap in their knowledge a favor. 040
Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 07/10/2026that stuff is best left as fun snippets to microblogging sites imo. the platonic form of this is a lil prompt in the tumblr inbox that the blogger riffs on. enjoyable brief dopamine hit, scroll on. 030
Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I use SO MANY sk recipes and always buy her books. They’re so good. 110
Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 07/10/2026yeah almost as if the really terrible stuff about [name redacted] wasn't actually what they objected to 040
Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 07/10/2026genuinely [name redacted] dead-enders are so fucking tedious 130
Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 07/10/2026i admittedly am categorically against the death penalty but this is unspeakably grotesque 010
Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 06/10/2026oh and someone else said the battlestar galactica reboot in the replies, another good answer but yes people need to understand the whole question, it goes beyond mere shark-jumping 230

Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Fun fact, my bestie is (without revealing too much identifying information) is a pretty accomplished public health official and geneticist and had the displeasure of meeting Watson a couple of years before he died. He was, in fact, just as big a dickhead in person as you would expect! 120
Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I admit I am confused about how this is new analysis, given this article from three years ago.nature.comWhat Rosalind Franklin truly contributed to the discovery of DNA’s structureFranklin was no victim in how the DNA double helix was solved. An overlooked letter and an unpublished news article, both written in 1953, reveal that she was an equal player. 220
Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 05/10/2026my optimism has been misplaced before so i could be wrong but it’s not like my expectations mean shit anyway lol 040

Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 03/10/2026i mean talarico is up in the averages and so is abbott, so that's still, like, the modal outcome but man, the possibility is tantalizing 030
Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 02/10/2026tbh as much as i would welcome him pivoting/moderating i think the ellen greenberg story is gonna be a problem regardless 040
Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Yup. And it ties back to the point that what even constitutes a racial or ethnic difference is entirely socially constructed. The same is of course true of eg religious differences—what level of commonality “counts” as homogeneous varies wildly and is highly context-dependent. 020
Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Yeah of course, there’s no reason any particular demographic trait needs to be THE schism vs commonality point. 130
Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Oh I know, I am not arguing otherwise! People massively underestimate diversity, I just mean that what counts as diversity is also constantly shifting. 080
Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 02/10/2026If everyone is from the same continent, country becomes more salient; if everyone is from the same country, city/province/district/whatever become more salient. 140
Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I would also argue that what counts as homogeneity/heterogeneity is incredibly arbitrary and socially constructed! Eg national origin becomes a more salient dividing line in communities that are superficially monochromatic. Places that might be “homogeneous” in some sense rarely end up being so. 281
Meyada @melari.bsky.social · 01/10/2026And the ع while they’re at it Throw in a ق for good measure. Is there one in AES’s name? No. Do they need to learn it anyway? Yes. 0110
