RE: High Streets

I have repeatedly received concerns from residents in Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes about the growing number of small cash-based businesses—particularly vape shops and barbers—appearing on our high streets. While many of these are operating entirely legally and contribute to our local economy, there is mounting concern that some are being used as fronts for money laundering and other criminal activity.

As Minister for Crime, Policing and Counter-Extremism, I’d be grateful if you could set out what action the Home Office is taking to identify and tackle these illegal operations. Communities feel frustrated that suspected criminal enterprises are being allowed to operate openly in high streets already struggling with empty shops and economic decline.

What progress has the Government made to strengthen enforcement and improve coordination with local authorities and Trading Standards to ensure swift intervention where there are legitimate concerns.

People want to see vibrant and safe town centres. That means backing legitimate business and ensuring those abusing the system face real consequences.

I look forward to your response and would welcome a meeting to discuss this matter.
