Tuna is embracing her autumnal roots. Literally.
A tortoiseshell cat lying on the grass with her feet up against a large, orange pumpkin.

I’m late to this so posting them at bedtime tonight.
Five (slightly damp) retrievers are ready for bedtime, curled on two elevated beds shoved together and covered with blankets.

Why a spoon cousin, why not an axe- BECAUSE IT’S DULL YOU TWIT. IT’LL HURT MORE!! If anyone asks for a spoon in my house, both these lines are recited. Even by my children, even before they saw the movie. Thems the rules.

Finished Wolf Worm by @tkingfisher.com last night (EXCELLENT, maybe my favorite of hers) and got to the afterward re the potential for screwworm outbreaks, only to realize I’d been subconsciously avoiding all the (real, current) reports of screwworm outbreaks. So, that’s it for me and sleep then

Not weighing in on caving (or not), but when you do get to it, I do not think you’ll be disappointed. It’s great.

The extra comma in this one is driving me crazy. I don’t know how @bcdreyer.social deals with all the poorly edited posts. (I hang my head in shame)

So that, is how (at least in my telling), the LGDs, an opossum, and I saved a random dude’s life. ~ FIN ~
Heron, a large, white, livestock guardian dog, stares at me thru the paddock fence. He’s thinking about where his opossum friend has gone.

Single vehicle accident, went straight off the road into the ditch. Sounds like he’s okay but was definitely unconscious. And I was the only call. 21/

Six minutes later they have a cruiser at the scene, three minutes after that a fire truck followed by several other emergency vehicles. (Video from next to barn looking south thru tree line) 20/

It’s pretty quiet out here late at night with very little traffic, but I’m peripherally aware of a car going way too fast, heading west on a road about 1/4 mile south of me, and downhill from the pasture. I hear speeding up, squealing tires, and then a very loud thump. No more car sounds. 15/

When I get back out to SW pasture our opossum friend is no longer playing dead but doesn’t want to move for fear of big white dogs playing chase again. He is unharmed aside from small cut on his nose and general stress. Daughter watches on phone as I gently sweep him with broom towards the exit. 14/

I call my college-age daughter bc at least she’s awake and can continue on this adventure with me. I have her on FaceTime but audio in my ear. Her comment: “you throw him out, that’s what you do!” (A very apt quote from What Do You Do With A Kangaroo, a Mercer Meyer classic for anyone with kids) 13/

At this point I’ve called my husband literally eight times to try to wake him up to help - nothing. On the 9th try he answers and I instruct him to bring out a broom to shoo our new friend out of the pasture. I collect broom and head out. 12/

Heron: (also noses opossum. Sighs) Mom ruins everything. Me: Okay!! Progress!! Treats in barn!! H&E: YAYYY! H&E then happily follow me to barn where I lock them in with treats and praise for being (mostly) such good dogs. 11/

Me: (following, and in my sternest mom voice) HERON. DROP. THE. OPOSSUM. Heron: DAMMIT!! FINE. (Gently deposits opossum onto ground) Opossum: I DO NOT LIKE THIS GAME. IM DED. NO MORE FUN. (plays opossum very convincingly and does not move) Egret: (noses opossum) YOU BROKE THE FUN NEW TOY!! 10/

Heron: FINE! I’LL TAKE MY NEW FRIEND ELSEWHERE IF YOU DON’T WANT TO PLAY (and heads to southwestern most pasture, opossum in tow) 9/

Heron: (looks at me, looks at opossum, looks at me) IMMA PICK IT UP AND BRING IT WITH US!!! (Picks up opossum by scruff of neck - very gently - to follow me to barn) Me: NOOOOOOOO! Heron drop it!! Heron: (confused) BUT NEW FRIEND!! Me: Heron, DROP IT! 8/

Me: Egret! C’mon! Heron! Leave it!! Let’s go to the barn! H&E: (consternation) BUT ITS A NEW FRIEND!! WHY LEAVE IT?! Me: nope. Gotta go. C’mon let’s get a treat at the barn!! 7/

Pause for obligatory pic of Heron and Egret, the bestest LGDs ever.
Two very large, fluffy, white dogs look over a stall door. They are both on their hind legs and have their front paws on top of the stall. Bay horse he in background for perspective on height. (They are big dogs)

I rush out of the hot tub. Very wet. Quickly check front porch to make sure they’re not playing a game with Tuna (not unheard of), but no, she’s in her bed. I slam on some clothes and my boots and grab a flashlight. I head out to pasture gate. 4/

They’re about ten feet off the fence and their tails are going furiously. I realize they’re circling something relatively small and dark - hard to see on the night-vision camera. Did they take a saddle blanket or something out of the barn to play with? 2/?

Story time!! Last night, 11:15pm. Everyone else asleep (including retrievers - thank goodness). I’m in the hot tub. I hear the marshies (Heron and Egret - our LGDs) start barking near the fence to the hill pasture, but it’s not their coyote bark. It’s…more excited? Not alarmed. 1/?

Sometimes sacrifices must be made in order to stay close to your sibling.
Two yellow labs are asleep in a leather armchair. Kestrel (bottom) was there first and is positioned comfortably. Wigeon (top) arrived second and positioned herself on top of Kes, but her rear wouldn’t fit properly so it’s hanging off the side of one arm.

NB: there is an empty, available armchair in the background of the picture. Widge declined.

Meg M @megmp7.bsky.social · 03/12/2025
Even Wigeon seems to be questioning the retriever logic of cuddling > comfort. Please note the clean, empty, blanketed bed RIGHT NEXT TO THEM. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
All five yellowish retrievers insist on lying on the same elevated dog bed instead of using the empty one *right* next to them. Wigeon (lab, middle left) has her head up and looks like she might be reconsidering her life choices. Merlin (lab, top right) is also staring at the camera but appears fine with the current arrangement.
