Laurie Loveday, a newbie witch, and Vincent Fraley, a newbie vampire, are two (somewhat) ordinary bookstore clerks
in Jinxborough, Massachusetts. One night, a vampire attacks Laurie, but Vincent intervenes and kills the assailant. The duo team up to hide the murder—if the truth gets out,
the fallen vamp’s brother, Hank Greaves, would kill them.

They can’t get sidetracked by their growing bond, but
Laurie makes Vincent feel human again. His vampire side matures rapidly, and if he doesn’t find a cure soon, Hank won’t be the only bloodsucker Laurie needs protection from. Her amateur powers are unreliable, and, shunned by vampire-
hating witches, Laurie fears she won’t find a magic teacher
unless she abandons Vincent.

Unfortunately, struggles with love and mastering witchy roots seem trivial when Hank demands answers about his missing brother...and a mysterious blackmailer threatens to expose the teens if they don’t do his shady bidding.

SNIPPET: I killed Wyatt Greaves. That was bad. Very bad. I didn’t want it to be this way—I’d tried to tell him to leave in peace. He’d forced me to intervene. It was pure instinct, really. Sluggish, Laurie sat up and coughed. “Oh, my God. I think it got in my mouth.” She gagged.
Blood seeped into her white shirt. The bittersweet smell was a hundred times more potent than her silly paper cut. My upper jaw ached from keeping my fangs at bay, and my sinuses burned.
Don’t you dare. Laurie was already scared and hurt. Plus, she was my coworker. I even thought she’d warmed up to me today.
Focus, idiot. I repeat: I killed Wyatt Greaves. Hide the murder. Cover it up. That was the only option.
I tucked the impromptu stake into my waistcoat—it would need to be destroyed later. “Are you okay?” I kicked Wyatt’s ashes into a storm drain. Particles clung to my shoe. I cringed and shook it off.
“No, I’m not okay,” she snapped. “He was a… And you… God, I can still taste it!”
