I can't tell you if this was the origin of the phrase, but it was on a vintage pride pin from the Lesbian Studies Coalition of Concordia, which was founded in 1989. And obviously a slight change from honey to maple syrup here given that it was a Canadian group

Know who else compared a group of people to rats?

One of the film’s most notorious sequences compares Jews to rats that carry contagion, flood the continent, and devour precious resources. Der ewige Jude is distinctive not only for its crude, vile characterizations made worse with its gruesome footage of a Jewish ritual butcher at work slaughtering cattle, but also for its heavy emphasis on the alien nature of the East European Jew. In one of the film’s sequences, “stereotypical” Polish Jews with beards are depicted as shaven clean and transformed into “western-looking” Jews. Such “unmasking” scenes aimed to show German audiences that there was no difference between Jews living in East European ghettos and those inhabiting German neighborhoods.

Wrapping up a fanfic I've off and on worked on for 2 years now and just 🥹🥹🥹

On summer evenings, when the fireflies danced on the edge of the lake and the cicadas sang their wild songs, you could find the town matriarchs outside on their porch in their rocking chairs. Their son, Lev, and his wife would often bring over food and the four would happily eat outside and watch the sunset.

When the food was finished, and the plates were clear, Ellie would pull out her guitar and pluck at the strings, and sing old songs that reminded her of her father.
