Researchers studied 8,402 COVID-reactive T cells from 42 patients and found those with mild COVID had more CD8+ “killer” T cells, which fought the virus more effectively for up to 4 months. The findings could help develop future COVID vaccines that offer longer-lasting protection.

New Scientist: COVID variant XFG is now dominant globally and better at evading antibodies. Immunity from vaccines and prior infections is still helping prevent widespread severe illness, but experts warn future variants remain a threat as declining global surveillance makes them harder to track.
A screenshot of an article headline from the New Scientist website, celebrating its 70 years anniversary logo.
The primary headline asks: "Does each new covid-19 variant pose a significant threat?" Below it, a subheadline reads: "Most covid-19 cases are caused by a particular type of variant, but do we need to worry every time a new one emerges?" The article is written by Jo Marchant and is dated 9 October 2026.
The lower half of the screenshot shows an illustration of multiple coronavirus particles with round red bodies covered in light blue spike proteins against a dark green, textured background. A small yellow warning icon caption below the image reads: "We've lived with covid-19 for more than half a decade, but it's still evolving." A friend has Covid right now. They have lost their sense of smell and they're having cognitive problems. This hit me today, as it often does: we made, and continue to make, a huge collective mistake in allowing a virus that impacts the brain to transmit unmitigated globally.

VYD2311, a new COVID monoclonal antibody, had fewer side effects than an mRNA vaccine in a Phase 3 trial (56.5% vs 91.4%). Combined with vaccination, it boosted neutralizing antibodies 2.5-fold, potentially offering extra protection without interfering with the vaccine's immune response.
A screenshot of a medical news article from Contagion Live (Infectious Diseases Today), dated September 29, 2026.
The bold headline reads: "VYD2311 Shows Superior Tolerability to mRNA COVID-19 Vaccine in Phase 3 Study".
The summary paragraph below states: "In the phase 3 LIBERTY study, the investigational monoclonal antibody, VYD2311, had significantly fewer adverse events than an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, and it did not blunt vaccine-induced neutralizing titers when the two were given together."
The center of the image features a detailed, dark blue 3D graphic illustration of a spherical coronavirus particle, showing its characteristic spike proteins protruding outwards from all sides. Below the illustration, light grey text credits the graphic to "Credit: Adobe images".

🧵US Weekly COVID update: Sep 28, 2026 🔸1 in 92 Actively Infectious 🔸532,000 Daily Infections 🔸3,810,000 Infections In The Past Week 🔸115,000,000 Infections in 2026 🔸191,000 to 760,000 Weekly Long COVID Cases 🔸900 to 1,700 Weekly Excess Deaths Source: pmc19.com
An infographic report titled "COVID-19 Heat Map, Based on CDC Wastewater Data & Standard Levels" by the Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative (PMC) Model, dated Sep 28, 2026.
The top half displays a color-coded map of the United States and its territories, showing localized COVID-19 risk levels by county. A color key at the bottom categorizes standard CDC relative levels and PMC prevalence estimates (proportion actively infectious) into five tiers:
•	Very Low (Blue, <0.9%)
•	Low (Green, 1.2%)
•	Moderate (Orange, 2.0%)
•	High (Red, 2.9%)
•	Very High (Purple, >3.5%)
Large portions of the Southern, Western, and Midwestern U.S. are shaded in dark pink/purple and red, indicating high to very high transmission levels.
Below the map, a text summary states that the US has at least 40 states and territories with COVID outbreaks, matching the previous week's count. It explicitly lists all 40 affected states and territories in alphabetical order, starting with Alabama and ending with Wyoming.
An infographic report titled "National COVID-19 Estimates (U.S.)" by the Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative (PMC) Model, dated Sep 28, 2026. The data is broken down into three main sections:
•	Infections: States that 1 in 92 people (1.1%) are actively infectious. It estimates 532,000 new daily infections, 3,810,000 infections in the past week, 115,000,000 infections in 2026, and a cumulative 5.43 infections per person.
•	Long COVID: Estimates 27,000 to 106,000 Long COVID cases resulting from new daily infections, and 191,000 to 760,000 cases from new weekly infections.
•	Excess Deaths: Estimates 130 to 230 excess deaths resulting from new daily infections, and 900 to 1,700 deaths from new weekly infections.
A data table titled "COVID-19 State Prevalence Estimates" by the Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative (PMC) Model, dated Sep 28, 2026.
The table lists U.S. states and territories alphabetically from Alabama to Mississippi. For each location, it tracks data across multiple columns:
•	Standard CDC Level and Revised CDC Level (noting a downshift in categories).
•	PMC Estimate % Actively Infectious: Provides ratios and percentages, such as 1 in 25 (4.0%) for California and 1 in 15 (6.7%) for Hawaii.
•	Chances anyone is infectious in a room of 10 to 100 people: Columns show statistical probabilities for room sizes of 10, 25, 50, and 100 people. For example, in Hawaii, there is a 50% chance in a room of 10 and >99% chance in a room of 100.
A footnote states that on August 14, 2026, the CDC revised categorical descriptors downward without notice.
A data table titled "COVID-19 State Prevalence Estimates" by the Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative (PMC) Model, dated Sep 28, 2026.
This page continues the alphabetical listing of U.S. states and territories from Missouri to Wyoming. It details:
•	CDC Levels: Compares standard levels against a revised, downshifted CDC tier system.
•	PMC Estimate % Actively Infectious: Lists current ratios and transmission rates. Highlights include Oregon at 1 in 25 (4.1%), Puerto Rico at 1 in 21 (4.8%), and the U.S. Virgin Islands at 1 in 16 (6.2%).
•	Chances anyone is infectious in a room of 10 to 100 people: Shows probabilities for varying group sizes. For example, in Texas, the risk scales from 31% in a room of 10 up to 98% in a room of 100.
Footnotes indicate limited data reporting for some areas and reference a website regarding the CDC's August 2026 downward category revisions.

PMC COVlD Update, Sep 28, 2026 (US): 🔸We're in a 13th COVlD wave. 🔸40 states & territories continue to have COVlD outbreaks, stable from last week. 🔸Levels likely peaked between Sep 7-13 at a PMC-estimated 580,000 new daily infections. pmc19.com/map
The US has at least 40 states and territories with COVlD outbreaks, the same number reported last week. These include Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Guam, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
There are likely outbreaks in additional states. The summary statistic of 40 only includes counties with observed data, rather than estimated data. For example, Idaho, Louisiana, Maryland, and Tennessee likely have outbreaks, but monitoring is poor.

Nuance:
Note that while PMC uses forecasting to estimate national statistics through Sep 28 and beyond, the state-level data do not, meaning they are now 9 days old. If the national forecast is correct, levels peaked between Sept 7-13, closely aligned with our prior forecasts. This would mean that levels are declining more so than depicted in the map. Levels often decline slowly, suggesting the need for ongoing precautions. Additionally, Biobot and 200 CDC sites are offline this week, and both have experienced major retroactive corrections of late, so the national forecast has more uncertainty than usual. For example, we could see the peak adjusted upward or a double peak. It is unclear how quickly reporting will resume at the offline sites.

Note that while PMC national statistical estimates include forecasting, the state-level data do not, meaning they are now 9 days old. If the forecast is correct, levels peaked between Sept 7-13.
