I am so tired of living under heat domes. It’s October, people.

This neighborhood dirt road is one of the remnants of the Los Angeles Red Car electric trolley line. Time was I could step outside, walk down a public staircase and catch a train to downtown LA.

Sign spottted today on my morning walk, in the form of a warning about road work: “REAL MEN WORKING IN TREES.” Then smaller print, “Real men respect women honor creator respect the trees that they climb and the animals there. These are my men.”

Every morning that I walk by the reservoir, I see this Canadian goose standing alone in the same place staring out over the water. What is he thinking? What keeps bringing him back)

This is the perfect diner meal, imo. The patty melt. A hamburger served on toasted rye bread with cheese, mustard, and fried onions. Heaven. Never found one in London. Los Angeles is full of places that does them right. This one is from my neighborhood diner, the Astro. W/fries & slaw.

I may have never identified more closely with a song lyric than this one from “High Lonesome” by the astonishing Gaslight Anthem: “And in my head there's all these classic cars and outlaw cowboy bands// I always kinda sorta wished I was someone else”
The cover the album “The ‘59 Sound” by the Gaslight Anthem.

The Earl Street Staircase. An occasional, brutal part of my morning walk. 212 steps, opening up onto a vista over the reservoir, just barely visible in photo #4

Especially for my friends in the UK, this is what a smash burger looks like. It’s not just a double meat burger. Rather, the patties are so thin (“smashed”) they cook quickly, sealing the juice inside and leaving a tell tale crusty edge. You don’t need to dress them up and give them a funny name.

Morning walk. I have traded the foxes of London for the coyotes of Los Angeles. These two fellows were hanging out around the corner from my house

Got picked up in the book of Daniel, too, in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. Love this graphic. We are in the age of iron mixed with clay.

My favorite house in my neighborhood. Looks like a big green ship that hit land on our hill. If it’s ever for sale, and if I’m ever rich, I just might buy it.

Now that I’m back in the USA, I can finally post a picture of these relic’s from America’s last big birthday in 1976. Jack in the Box glass mugs, with the Liberty Bell on one side, and the restaurant logo on the other. Solid, built to last, going strong after 50 years of regular use

These two pictures ended up together in my photo library, one the iconic shot of William Holden floating in a swimming pool in Sunset Boulevard, the other of David Bowie seeming to float in space from the “You’re Not Alone” show at the Lightroom in London. Bowie would’ve appreciated the serendipity

One of the striking things seeing the Melisende Psalter in person is how much the gold letters glitter. This is a page from a litany -- a long list of saints' names. Some names are written in gold, so when read the page, those names sparkle. In the high-res PDF, they are all a dull brown.

It has been blessedly windy at night in London. Though, as a side effect, it led to technical difficulties on my morning walk.

So I spent the afternoon with British Library Manuscript Egerton 1139, a.k.a., the Melisende Psalter. I have thoughts. Mainly, I wish I had a week with it.

In 1999, Christian Bale played Jesus. In 2000, he played Patrick Bateman. That’s versatility.

Just finished reading the post-apocalyptic novel “The Long Tomorrow” (1955) by Leigh Brackett. She also wrote screenplays, starting with The Big Sleep (1946), cowritten with William Faulkner and ending with The Empire Strikes Back (1980), cowritten with George Lucas. Who has a career like that?
