1/ This outlines some of Plotinus’s Neoplatonic sense of profusion: kvond.wordpress.com/2009/04/24/t... What is important in understanding Spinoza - imo - is how he developed a Degree-of-Being concept (taken from Plotinus perhaps through Augustine).

"I belong to a cult. Someone did some research that undermines the core tenets of my cult and came up with a catchy phrase that makes it harder to recruit more people to my cult. This makes me sad."
Screencap of tweet on X from @jackclarkSF (Jack Clark):

"stochastic parrot" was a mimetically-fit cognitive virus that spread from 2021-2025; it temporarily blinded many gifted people to the nature of AI progress, burning up crucial years in which they could have helped think through the response to the situation.

Palingenetic. Nothing is being conserved, its being fashioned ex nihilo as a "memory". "How can it not know what it is?" "Memories! You're talking about memories!"

The Great Human Collective (GHC) is now "thinking it"...while no one "thinks it". Somehow God/Substance/Nature is "thinking it". Somehow Capitalism is "thinking it", but we are not. We have been relieved of the onus of thinking, and instead are simply thought.

James Jouissance on twitter is so hilarious. The sarcasm is too much, but still...very funny on how we think about things like this today.

The first is spooky, just because he's so casually rattling off our reality, with almost no theory or rationality in context. I've always felt Rorty was a better mind than credited by many.

I think the battle over LLM "AI" was lost when we started calling it "AI" and not "mimic engine". ...and of course people knew this.

Really interesting question. It's painful to remove anyone major because even wrong turns produce beautiful criticism. Maybe Jacobi because he's the butterfly flap that triggered the entire Pantheism Controversy which ended up producing a vast misreading of Spinoza & giving birth to German Idealism.

I loved David Graeber. I remember seeing him on Charlie Rose & thinking to myself: "Hmmm, I'm going through some agonist stuff at college, I wonder if he would help?" I searched his email and wrote him about my academia-ish-crisis. Damn, he gave me the most thoughtful, beautiful, helpful advice. 1/

A challenge to my Spinozist metaphysics. Do words have "agency"? Do they have conatus? How do they relate to other extension on the monistic plane of immanent expression? Is the word in my mind, on my tongue, on that sign the same or similar "parts in a ratio of movement and rest"?

In his 1906 novel The Confusions of Young Törless Robert Musil uses the questionable ontological status of Imaginary Numbers to represent how "impossible" things can and are achieved, how one can cross seemingly categorical impossibilities.

I think this is key to what the "slop" nature of generative "AI" is, what makes it slop. When looking at stochastically generated content one can no longer read Singularities as signatures. An "event" in the material can no longer trigger new capacities in YOU, or your expression. It is sterile.

When I see appeals to a "democratization" of creativity (every Subject must be an Artist!), I really see "authoritarian control over a newly defused creativity through tech". By pulveristically atomizing the "creative" it then can be newly regulated by the algorithmic control over 1s and 0s.

(AI actually has been used in science and medicine for decades and is incredibly good at doing things like finding cancer that can’t be seen with the human eye but that is a completely different type of AI then we’re all angry about it and we shouldn’t discuss them in the same conversations TBH)

I'm still struck by how a mentally unsound Nietzsche is taken as the model for some sort of ideal. Not saying his criticisms aren't brilliant and important. I'm saying his (connotative) "I am the peak of human thriving" really feels self-disproving. Who would want to be Nietzsche?

One of the more difficult things about arguments against LLMs and AI, is that these same arguments were brought against women in the late 19th c. That they were merely mimics of intelligence, "mirrors", "actors", lacking generative powers. Merely "moons" to males Suns. And, that when caught 1/

It's been pointed out how much Spinoza is within the Neoplatonic heritage, but it still surprises me to see his positions fairly well framed by Plotinus himself.
