"A proposal by the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) to power data centres in the province will only allow natural gas-powered projects to connect to the grid" The worst petrostates on the planet are scrambling to cement AI slop as a new demand source for fossil fuels
A proposal by the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) to power data centres in the province will only allow natural gas-powered projects to connect to the grid.

The June proposal states that gas-fired thermal generation can operate in all weather conditions, can handle high electric loads and passes the “electrical island” test, meaning it can provide stable power without grid access.

Renewables, hybrid facilities and standalone energy storage facilities are excluded because they don’t meet those requirements it says.

⚖️ Can communities facing climate harm take the fossil fuel companies most responsible to court? That question is with the Supreme Court, after today's arguments in Suncor v. Boulder. We say YES. #SCOTUS should not grant fossil fuel defendants special treatment. Our statement: bit.ly/3TKELHs
Quote card reading: There is nothing in the Constitution or the Clean Air Act that grants immunity to fossil fuel companies or holds that they should shoulder no share of the injuries their deception and pollution have caused. Accountability is not the threat here. Climate change is. The people bearing its costs deserve their day in court. [Nikki Reisch, Director, Climate and Energy Program, Center for International Environmental Law]Quote card reading: State courts routinely apply state law and decide whether alleged injuries warrant relief. There is no exception for fossil-fueled harm. Boulder is not asking the court to set a national emissions policy or regulate greenhouse gas emissions. It is asking to present its claims and evidence in court and, if it proves its case, to obtain damages for harms borne by local communities. [Charles Slidders, Manager and Senior Attorney, Financial Strategies, Center for International Environmental Law]
