As a medical editor, language - usage - lexicography - culture - memes - all meet someplace. And that place appears to be my desk.

You’ve seen this type of ad before. They all share a common property: Whatever is shown in the photo will not appear at the link, which will be mostly women’s skincare products.

Well that sucks. Two weeks is short notice. You might be able to negotiate an extension. I hope things work out for the best.

Aw, sorry to hear this. As long as you’re vaccinated it should be fairly brief (fingers crossed).

The Boring History channel on Spotify works well for sending me off, although sometimes it’s interesting enough that I’ll pay attention for a while. The history of playing cards, for instance, is fascinating.

Another example of the enshittification of the internet. Every user click, every user action is monetized. It’s a fight just to keep the cookie trackers at bay. Exactly, it wears you down, constantly swiping ads and popups away.

Love your taste in movies. If I remember correctly, it stars Peter Fonda and William Shatner. Low budget, yet a strong strain of terror throughout. Punches above its weight.

Indeed. And employment is near zero until the midterms because companies don’t want to hire in the face of political uncertainty here.

His crypto coin is meant to give people a way to pay him unlimited bribes. That’s for the rich buyers. Retail investors, rural Maga suckers, they lose their money but don’t gain the ear of the mad king.

If I bet on Kaishi, I’d put money on a Dem blowout. As electoral strategy, we should act like we’re behind. Leave everything on the road.

What the last 10 years have made clear is that social norms and pressures can keep these people quiet. Like herpes, they can lie dormant for a long time. Given the chance, they come crawling out again.

Oh that looks like a deep dive. I’ll definitely check it out. Good genre for me. If you get a chance, same kind of thing is Heat with Burt Reynolds. Unknown noir.

The New Criticism school argues this position, that artistic works should stand on their own. No need for the artist to explain it.

Usage note: Ran across this today: [That’s because while many folks use “peruse” as a synonym for “to skim,” it means the exact opposite.] This is how people get led astray by “experts” who are all too willing to parrot nonsense. Peruse is a contronym (Janus word) like sanction or cleave.

What’s happening is that the people in charge don’t work. For them, government work is collecting money and benefits. If they need to do something, they turn to the intern and yell, “Use ChatGPT! Do it! Hurry!” That’s exactly what we’re seeing.

The situation changes daily. To spot AI, I look for something “off,” uncanny, devoid of affect. AI text has a flavor and a thumbprint you can sense when you’re reading an you start to get the impression of a 5th-grader who hasn’t done the reading and is winging it.

I look at it this way: The LLMs are trained on human data. They try to emulate human speech. It’s their job to sound human, not mine. Since I don’t use AI in my writing, the burden is on the accuser to prove otherwise. Seems fair.

Well, commas and em-dashes set off parenthetic elements, and points of ellipsis and semicolons aren’t identical to them or each other. I would be leery of allowing AI to interfere with my expression.
