Where can I buy the report? Sorry I'm missing out on the event but I'd like to add the report in my library's collection.

Look up Jella Lepman. A Jewish refugee from the Nazis who was hired by the US Army to work on rehabilitating German women and children. Her work, with children using literature as a bridge and the organizations she founded have a giant, unrecognized legacy: IBBY, Int'l Childrens Library and more.

If only there was a process for vetting these people before they were given the job. If only a group of insiders could interview them before voting them up or down... oh, wait, where do you work again?

LSTA, the funding mechanism for federal.aid to libraries, archives, and museums comes up for renewal every 20 years. This August, Congress needs to reauthorize the act or it will expire and with it, the funding.

There were at least 2 discussions about boys and their needs in the literary landscape at the Bologna Book Fair this year. It's coming but we need it to pick up speed.

Pop culture doesn't give boys a lot of good role models. If you can't save the world or the princess, are you in the story at all as anything other than the butt of the joke? Girl power needs a boy equivalent, regardless if the patriarchy which hurts everyone.

That is awesome. My grandparents used to buy Brookdale soda. I'm not sure if it was a thing local to them or more widespread but they would go to the distribution center and buy a case of those glass liters, mixing the flavors in the case as they liked.

I'm interested to see the approach it takes. Two last things, one is that the number of people pulling for the US to course correct in spite of ourselves was unexpected. Second is, how inspired I am by the incredible amount of young illustrator talent in attendance. Mind blown.

...what it means to be a man, what society expects and accepts from and for men and I hope that this will give boys alternatives beyond some.if the toxicity we see in the manosphere. One book mentioned was about boys going into the cating professions-teaching, nursing, and the like.

The focus of the panels I sat in the audience for were very explicit that this isn't something that should come at the expense of girls or women but, rather, in compliment to. I have mixed feelings about if I trust that will not be the outcome or approach. I do see a lack of vision for...

Boys need these sorts of books now, too. They need to find inspirational role models.for their futures in the way that have been so successful for women. It seems odd because, patriarchy. But as a mother to a young boy, I see the need.

Another line of thinking is the role of boys. On one panel the discussion was about the need for books about roles for boys and men in society beyond Prince Charming or super heroes. That books for girls featuring messaging and examples of being able to.do.and be anything are.common now...

At its core, it probably comes down to compare and contrast. But what if the information is newly encountered? Compare to what? Contrast with what? Information moves quickly, and stopping to research, especially for a kid, seems like a recipe for failure at best. There have to be better strategies.

As a public librarian, understanding that non-fiction requires different types of deconstruction skills than fiction does helps, but who is doing the work to identify those specific skills?

In a world of disinformation and AI generated stuff of varying quality, our kids will desperately need to understand how to interpret factual information. He'll, us olds need it too, maybe more. The days of trusting books, .edu, and .gov are long gone, but we still give that info out. Why?

I had an amazing week at the Bologna International Children's Book Fair. So much to think about. Information literacy is one primary issue I am pondering. We teach kids how to decode fiction, but non-fiction isn't taught the same way and the 2 should be on par. 🧵

If Rowe and these EOs teach us nothing else, it should be that the inability of Congress to do their job and pass laws that govern us is what sharpened the blade that is being used to filet the carcass of the US currently. Yesterday was more of the same: flabby lawmakers not doing their jobs.

Because in America, wealth is the only standard people are measured by, and if you can manipulate and exploit your way to that level of wealth you must be good in all the ways that people can be, which includes being a genius.

2 books, perfect for late elementary/middle grade readers, & stand up for adult readers. Most heroic books feature super heroes, but these are normal boys who rise to meet extraordinary circumstances. Both are translated from the original Spanish. We need more stories about ordinary heroes. 📚
A picture of the cover of 2 books:

Mananaland by Pam Munoz Ryan is the story of a 12-year-old boy discovering a family secret. It propels him into a perilous journey to help save another child, and, along the way, he discovers himself, his strength, and what the true meaning of the secret really is.

Johnny, the Sea, and Me by Melba Escobar is also a story of self-discovery focusing on a 10-year-old whose family is splitting up and whose mother will not let him grow up. During a vacation, Pedro runs away and, in being lost, finds himself, some new friends, and a lot of confidence.

Both books are excellent reads for any late elementary/middle grade kid, but particularly for boys, they provide examples of heroism that doesn't require super powers or technology. The messaging is that normal kids can be heroes by virtue of the choices they make and their own strength and intellect.

There may be waste in government, and fraud. The way to root that out is with a thorough audit, program by program. What these guys are doing is using a flame thrower to set America and our interests on fire and then saying, "Oopsie". They don't know what they are doing and we will pay the price.

I was in a training about a statewide program rollout last week. The thing that struck me and that I keep coming back to is that all of the materials had to be written for a 5th or 6th grade reading level because that is the level a majority of Americans can comprehend. I know it, & yet, shocking.
