Last time technocrats took over a large nation and broke systems they didn't understand, sixty million Chinese people died in a famine.

Wait, I thought it was supposed to cost FORTY BILLION DOLLARS and then give us $80m a year to spend on renewables. Or something. Instead of just spending FORTY BILLION DOLLARS on renewables and skipping the middleman. Brilliant economic minds at work folks!

It is clear now that our doubling-down on dead technology will not save Canada, but kill it. Les Québecois have been at the forefront of adapting to our new climate reality for decades, and the rest of Canada wants to keep dragging us all backwards. I don't blame them for being angry. I'm angry too.

Dear federal government: make sure when you set the land corridor you pick a route that's also usable by high speed rail. Then once this fails, we'd at least be halfway to something actually useful.

Not too large, by any means. Limited by archaic voting systems that prioritize geographic proximity over literally anything else. I vote for values, not pork-barrel dollars, but me and everyone like-minded are too spread-out to ever have a voice in government. We need proportional representation!

Carney is truly our own Canadian reflection of Trump -- telling us what we want to hear, but every real policy move has been in favour of a few established industries and their insanely-rich owners, to the detriment of us all.

The corporate media falling in lockstep behind their anointed candidate last year was clear and obvious even at the time, but enough people were angry and scared enough that they weren't thinking straight.

Everybody who calls you on your bullshit isn't real, am I right? "Single dad" in your bio must be a complete coincidence.

Only ignorance I see is from the selfish people who think their late sunset is more important than all the kids out in the dark. It is fine to admit you didn't think about that. No need to be so defensive.
220
Matt Saunders @mds-can.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
You mean "dark out when it's usually light" i.e. when all the kids have to walk to school.
240
Matt Saunders @mds-can.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
And of course to pander to the ignorant we're all trying to switch to daylight saving time all year. Now all the kids get to dodge cars in the dark just to get to school so we can have sunset at 5:30.

the Côte-Nord region's northern border is set at 55 N; unfortunately Labrador's river border doesn't respect arbitrary latitudes so the region has two exclaves. Nunavik is switching to utc-4 year-round starting November and so gets to be on Atlantic time now. thus the blobs.

Yes, Comrade, "saboteurs" are clearly out there causing missed production targets. I can't wait for this century's version of the Industrial Party Trial. Or are we getting stabbed in the back?

Does Ford also bear the legal responsibility for the increased injuries and deaths? At what point are we supposed to hold public servants accountable for their decisions?

In order words: I'd love some actual support to the statement that there is "no smart public policy basis" for making transit free. The marginal cost of extra passengers is essentially zero, and forcing payment just pushes people to other, easier and more familiar modes of transport.
020
Matt Saunders @mds-can.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
Every source of friction is a deterrent, and while presto's by no means the worst I've seen (looking at you, Guelph Transit) -- reducing and removing friction points is the most important part of convincing rare and occasional riders to use the service more.

Matt Saunders @mds-can.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
I think I'm still a little traumatized by the complexity of getting a presto card, linking it to my phone's wallet, and putting money on it. Of course I found out the hard way that you can't boop two people through on the same credit card.

Do fares even recover the cost of fare enforcement, the cost of the sales infrastructure, the cost of the scanners and turnstiles? Do they cover the cost to society of every mile driven that could have been a transit trip?

Or maybe take the Line 2 or Line 5 out and hope enough people get off the GO to make room for us at Bloor/Mt Dennis? Or should we just drive to Yorkdale and avoid Metrolinx entirely? @metrolinx.bsky.social taking the train to Toronto should not require this much thought. This is embarrassing.
010
Matt Saunders @mds-can.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
Seasoned veterans of Metrolinx and the TTC: how bad will the return trip be? We only have one viable train to get back to Guelph. Should we: - try to get the 4:48 at Union and won't have problems getting on? - try to get the 2:48 or 3:48 at Union and wait a while in Etobicoke or Brampton?

Matt Saunders @mds-can.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
Tomorrow, I will be riding the GO Train to Toronto to see DOG MAN THE MUSICAL. (Yay!) We land in Union in the morning and should have plenty of time to take the TTC up Yonge. The Toronto FC also has a game tomorrow, expecting 45,000+ fans to descend on BMO Field to see some famous guy, I dunno.

This is why they were pushing hydrogen so hard a few years ago. Once it became clear to everyone that batteries were the clear winner, this is why they're pushing nuclear so hard now. No matter what, to them you are a consumer and must never become a producer.
040
Matt Saunders @mds-can.bsky.social · 08/04/2026
This exactly. The auto industry figured out Transportation-as-a-Service long before software got in on it. Why sell a car you can power yourself when you can be locked into a monthly fuel subscription?
150
Matt Saunders @mds-can.bsky.social · 30/03/2026
Even then, they only go up in *cost*, not *value*. No matter the price, it's still only ever worth one fancy car. The only truly appreciating assets are the ones that 1) provide you with an income, that you can 2) invest in the asset to produce even more income later.

Of course it's a black pickup truck. Of course it's piloted by a child wholly incapable of handling the added responsibility. Clearly we need to ban more bikes. The penalties for fleeing the scene of an accident should be the same as the penalties for refusing an impairment test.

The only thing stopping Carney from doubling down on his Harper-era austerity / corporate welfare policies is his lack of a majority. A Carney majority will pursue all the wrong policy objectives without any check from Parliament. It will be a disaster for the country.

Great map! Let's not forget the Hanlon Creek / Torrance Creek wildlife corridor that connects the south end of the property to Preservation Park. Though we've sadly cut it in a couple places, it's still mostly intact.

It's easy to want nebulous, undefined change. Once the party selects a leader, the media machine can ramp up against a real person, and the more easily-deluded of our voters will find some reason to hold their nose and vote for the cons again.

Matt Saunders @mds-can.bsky.social · 20/02/2026
Cars are literally the worst example as by far the majority of the annual cost of ownership is depreciation. Second is insurance, which doesn't noticeably decrease for EVs. You essentially never want to replace a vehicle that you own if it is still fit for purpose.
120
Matt Saunders @mds-can.bsky.social · 20/02/2026
The best car to drive is always the one you already have. Don't let anyone try to make you feel bad about it. But if you ever get a chance to buy a different car, electric is leaps and bounds better than internal combustion.

How much does the Ontario economy lose when an incident like this one closes a transport hub as big as Union? We need to put a number to the cost of this incident if we're going to successfully advocate for more robust transit with better redundancies.

Yup. It's elevated. Off grade. Doesn't have to wait for car traffic. Undoubtedly the primary reason why it's so great. Quebec, on the other hand, is putting their system on roads. Saving a few dollars now at the cost of making the system worse for everyone.
100
Matt Saunders @mds-can.bsky.social · 29/01/2026
Every dollar "saved" by building at grade is charged a hundredfold to commuters as a permanent time tax, for the entire lifetime of the project. How many entire human lives worth of time will be wasted sitting on an unnecessarily slow tram?

Was out skating today in the apocalyptic cold. Nine kilometers (that's like five and a half miles) up the Rideau Canal. I was wearing a nice wool sweater and my baby slept just fine under a blanket in the stroller... Might have been a little less windy though.
