Very delayed on my part but I wrote this reverse poem for @mdryuuzine.bsky.social ! For those who don't know, it's meant to be readable both from top to bottom and in reverse, bottom to top. The spot art by @doodlingdoods.bsky.social is gorgeous so please checkout the free zine to see it in full!

The displayed reverse poem reads as follows:

Emerging from the shadow, blade in hand
I am here for the sake of an absent other
For after all
The darkness had no hold on me
Yet I find it difficult to believe
How our sworn promise was for nothing
And there is no denying
That bottomless grief yet clings to my mind and body
But surrounded by this fog on moonless nights,
There remains a light, burning crimson it leads onward
As an arrow tracing its target, a blade piercing forward,
Through the multitudes that stand against me
I must fight to know
What is the truth?
Indeed,
To what depths does this darkness reach?

The bordering flowers include: bird's foot trefoil (revenge)
white chrysanthemums (truth)
forget-me-nots (true love)
crimson polyanthus: the heart's mystery
carolina jasmine: separation
dwarf sunflower: adoration
flos adonis: painful recollection

Masked disciple (MD) looks at a miniature figure of Ryunosuke in a darker, candlelit environment. A bright, dreamy landscape is behind MD's head as he thinks about Ryunosuke. From left to right: Ryu's hip tilt, Ryu's objection pose, Ryu's thinking pose, Ryu's smile, and Ryu's hand resting on Karuma. In the center left depicts Nyasked Disciple and two Chuunos on either side of him.

Summary:
“We know each other, don’t we?” Naruhodo starts to nod, a furrow at his brow, but the disciple corrects himself before he can answer. “We…knew each other…didn’t we?”

The nod slows, the furrow disappearing, and that same timid smile returns, lopsided in a way that the disciple can’t deny is endearing.

“Were we…close?”

“Yes,” Naruhodo replies, staring with such force that the disciple thinks he must be trying to bring his memories back with sheer willpower alone. When the disciple stays silent, he continues. “Quite.”

Summary:
Ryunosuke’s hand drifted to his hip in a gesture that seemed instinctive rather than intentional, and the disciple’s eyes followed to find it atop the sword at his side.

It was a Japanese blade, lacking the elaborate ornamentation of the English sword that the disciple carried, but beautiful nonetheless. Its sheath was solid black, with a golden tip, and the disciple knew more strongly than he had known anything else since his awakening that the blade beneath was polished to a mirror-like shine, sharpened to a deadly point, curved gently along its length. He knew the way that the hilt fit against his palm and how the diamond design along it felt beneath the pad of his thumb.

The defense attorney wrapped his hand around it, low toward the guard so his fingertips could brush along the red ribbon beneath it. The motion was soft, gentle, and with the disciple’s attention fixed to it, he felt a phantom hand against his skin, through his hair.

The disciple didn’t know who he was, didn't even remember his own name. He didn’t remember this man who so obviously remembered him, or who he might have been to the man whose past has been forgotten.

But that sword…*that sword…*

The nod slows, the furrow disappearing, and that same timid smile returns, lopsided in a way that the disciple can't deny is endearing.

{ #mdryuu #asoryuu #spoilers } 🔞 🌙PREVIEW🌙 So, we wrote some spicy roleplay food for the @mdryuuzine.bsky.social zine! The project releases really soon, so keep an eye out for the launch!

Ryunosuke's mind wanders to the quiet disciple he once knew. Though the disciple thankfully had ended up being Kazuma as predicted, something in his mind -- for some reason -- had secretly hoped that the quiet, polite figure that followed Lord van Zieks like a kitten would always be an enigma.

He cannot figure out why. He shouldn't want this. He has everything he wants. He is absolutely elated Kazuma is alive, but something about the concept of being swept away in a romance by a mysterious stranger has appealed to him for the longest time.

If there was more time, perhaps he may have had the chance to explore that. It may be time to address it before it consumes him.

A zine preview graphic for "Devotion in Penumbra: A Mdryuu Zine"
The graphic is a deep brown with golden stars and dotted lines. In the top left is a crescent moon and at the bottom is a cloud that says "Credit Name Farky"

The text reads:
The disciple didn't know who he was, didn't even remember his own name. He didn't remember this man who so obviously remembered *him,* or who he might have been to the man whose past had been forgotten.

But that sword...*that sword*...

The disciple knew it like the back of his hand. He knew it like an old friend. Like a treasured possession. Somehow, some way, he knew it like it was a part of him, and he, a part of it.
