My forthcoming "The Nature of the Sword" for Shatter the Sun is my first pro short story sale, and through the magic of my Little Treat protocol, i had cause to commission some fun art of those terrible fellows Ilwyn & Vencario! @jkasonetc.bsky.social captured their dynamic really well!!
Pencil sketch of Vencario Eratena by Jaxton Kimble; Vencario is a dark-haired fellow in a wide stance with a smirky expression on his face, doing a Knife Trick with his right hand and an i-dare-you gesture with the left; both wrists wrapped and with a cestus over the knuckles. His shirt is open at the front; the whole of him being rather cavalier.Pencil sketch of Ilwyn M'gavn by Jaxton Kimble; Ilwyn is a broad-shouldered ginger fellow with his smithing gear on, and a similar amount of try-me in his gesture and expression, if slightly less overt than Vencario, still very certain he has the upper hand. Or hammer.

Crown of the World Unbound, the third book in the Scourgelands sequence, is coming in summer 2025! 👑 To mend what is torn, she must first gather the pieces. Kharise gen Valuur once wandered the many lands of Derebor. Now she must don its shattered crown—or someone else will. 👑
An iridescent dark cover with glowing text that reads "Crown of the World Unbound" in a swirly calligraphy with "M Daniel McDowell", "Song of the Scourgelands: book 3", and "Full cover to be revealed" in bold type

I am still in somewhat startled disbelief that I am a #SPFBOX semifinalist! Honored, stunned, relieved, humbled... I'm veritably verklempt. I still have not gotten around to doing all the little things about it, but I am beside myself. 💜

so, it turns out that I require the DIAMONDLIKE creation-pressure of an existing cover and a hard deadline to make myself do the thing HOWEVER Since I am hand-painting my cover and I'm extremely a specific type of person: we have A PLACEHOLDER THE SHEPHERD IN SHADOW: June 2024
On a black background, centered scrollwork modern blackletter calligraphy in white that reads: The Shepherd in Shadow

Below this, a centered nine-faceted gem icon in white followed by the text:

M. Daniel McDowell
