Spatial heterogeneity of sedimentary organic carbon in fjords around Stavanger, Norway – implications for upscaling

Fjords are estimated to bury 18 millions tonnes of organic carbon each year globally. But how reliable are these large-scale estimates? A new study takes a closer look at the seabed of fjords around Stavanger, Norway, and finds that the answer depends on where you look. ic3.uit.no/news/global-...

There is a growing body of evidence showing that fjords are heterogeneous in terms of seabed sediments and the properties of organic carbon they store. This has implications for upscaling from local studies to regional, national or global levels. We make suggestions how upscaling could be improved.

In addition, spatial protection of impacted stocks might lead to the displacement of fishing fleets. Protection of vulnerable organic carbon in currently unfished areas ensures that fishing displacement will not impact vulnerable stocks.

Mobile bottom fishing is operating in increasingly deeper water (doi.org/10.1016/j.fi...). Trawling penetrates rapidly into Arctic shelf areas previously protected by extensive ice-cover as a response to interannual sea ice loss (doi.org/10.1088/1748...).

An image of the Norwegian continental margin showing hotspots and cold spots of seabed organic carbon. Hotspots are areas that are likely vulnerable to physical disturbance with respect to their climate regulating functions. They are located in the Skagerrak and central Barents Sea. Cold spots are areas that are relatively robust to physical disturbance and are found on the North Sea plateau, shelf banks in the Norwegian and southern Barents Seas and along the continental shelf break.
