Ha! For the while, our Salome head was hanging out in the green room at the company's office / rehearsal space / costume shop. Did some of our chorus sopranos take selfies with it? Oh yes.

As I read it, it's the parent organization (formerly Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association) of the orchestra, chorus, presentation series, venue, and educational programs that has the Chicago Symphony name. The orchestra is still the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Alas, he couldn't get to the booth, it was too crowded. From news coverage he gathers that it's a tempura-style light crisp batter and a special Minnesota variety apple, but he doesn't know which one. Maybe some news stories online might have that information?

I think it's good for the rest of us too. In 2003 I got a bunch of punishing inquiries about 43 from someone at a music tech conference in Leeds. I answered as best I could and he figured I was OK. "It's the ones who don't travel that we have to worry about."

Great points here! I don't think there's an opera composer who wouldn't benefit from studying how Puccini uses repetition to create memorable melodies. This would work with contemporary musical language too. And Hamilton provided one of the best answers yet to dialogue on the musical stage - rap it.

Like Puccini's Fanciulla? It has tons of ensemble dialog that frames the expressive moments for the big 3. Of course it's Italian, not English.

We still have one more weekend at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz. You may have missed what apparently was our most provocative piece in many seasons, but there's lot more good stuff coming. I haven't seen a pan like this in a long time, especially for a piece I liked.

Michael Good @mdgood.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
Yeah, usually when Cabrillo's programming gets criticized, it's for being too safe and accessible. I was planning to have this piece in my back pocket to respond to any such critiques this year, but no need now! I really liked it, but certainly get why others wouldn't.
