You cleared so much from that stretch of coast, thank you. Every item removed is one less threat to wildlife. 🐳

If you watched BBC's Buried with Michael Sheen, you'll know that chemicals can wreak havoc on our health, and our environment. There is another group of dangerous forever chemicals known as PFAS. We want the UK Government to ban the use of PFAS to protect our ocean, and us.

Can you guess the top litter item picked up by our volunteers across the UK? The results from every survey completed between 16–31 May are now in. A huge thank you to everyone who took part in our Source to Sea Litter Survey.
A graphic asking 'Can you guess the top litter item picked up by volunteers across the UK?' with images of litter and two men collecting rubbish.Graphic about drinks-related litter, showing text and scattered litter items like bottles and caps. Text says: "If you thought drinks-related litter .... you were so close."A list of common waste items: metal cans, plastic bottles, bottle caps, and glass bottles, with accompanying images of bottles. Text says: "Here’s a rundown of what did make the top five: 2. Metal drinks cans. 3. Plastic drinks bottles. 4. Plastic bottle cap lids. 5. Glass bottles". Graphic advocating for a Deposit Return Scheme, showing wildlife and pollution on a beach. Text says: "Which really shows why a Deposit Return Scheme is needed! Hopefully we’ll see far fewer drinks containers discarded into our environment once it comes into place in 2027."

We see your point there, but consumer pressure can be extremely powerful. Suppliers won't provide what people refuse to buy. Of course, we need to approach the problem from more than one angle and work with all stakeholders.

We found more than 600,000 pieces of litter on UK beaches last year - but there’s hope. The presence of single‑use plastic items fell by 18% compared with 2024. This shows that data‑driven policy is working! See the full results here: orlo.uk/RDlZt

Three cheers for ocean wins! This week we’ve had some great news for our seas: 1) Wales can include glass in their DRS (October 2027) 2) Plastic in wet wipes banned in Scotland (like the rest of the UK) 3) The UK Government is one big step closer to ratifying the High Seas Treaty.
