“I made the inherent mistake of thinking that, because she was young, I could mold her into the perfect partner.” -Deaton describing his grooming a 15 year old girl

While we’re on candidates and sex crimes, let’s not forget that MA GOP Senate nominee John Deaton, in his own memoir, describes committing statutory rape of a 15yo girl. Not an allegation. Not opposition research. By his own account, in his own words. #mapoli

The most under-the-radar story this election year is that MA GOP Senate nominee John Deaton may have committed a homicide. So I wrote about it. If you're going to demand accountability from others, you gotta lead by example. Deaton owes voters some answers. #mapoli wmasspi.com/2026/05/op-e...

“Have you ever killed someone?” isn’t the type of question you normally need to ask someone running for office. You should ask John Deaton.

The old guard is failing us, and their disdain for voters who try to initiate change is a liability to earning popular support for a progressive agenda. We need new Democratic leadership on Beacon Hill, and we need it yesterday. #mapoli

Thousands came to the rallies in Andover, North Andover & Boxford—but not a single MAGA. It’s a sign they’re either ashamed or scared. Either way, those who did come were part of the millions who made a massive show of resistance to Trump’s fascist attempt to remake America. #NoKings #mapoli

I had the chance to discuss the MAGA North dynamics at play for Canada’s Conservatives. From the great reporting of @lefthandstu.bsky.social MAGA North is solidly half the Conservative Party—a problem that lasts as long as Trump is president (so, god-willing, no more than 3.5 years) #cdnpoli

“the bench is deep and popular” LOL The average voter has no idea who is on our federal bench… which has shrunk each cycle and will be lucky to not disappear entirely this time around. The ndp needs a change at the top—and preferably someone from outside of their bench

Hey Peter, I’m the mediocre white guy who wrote this. Can assure you it’s not copied from anywhere else. What do you think I have wrong about the NDP’s current dismal outlook? Do you not think a provincial leader like WB Kinew would improve the party’s standing?

Well, if they won and he became PM, someone else from the talented bench on Manitoba’s NDP MLAs. And they would have no better federal partner than in a newly elected PM Kinew! And the NDP didn’t win, he would still be able to continue as premier.

The NDP could have the selection process be a true competition rather than a coronation. Other provincial leaders (Notley? maybe Eby even?) could enter the ring and make a similar case too. I truly believe Wab would make a clean sweep of any contest though.

No time for the NDP to do this, why? The Liberals are doing a leadership race right this moment. There's no logistical reason why the NDP couldn't as well.

We should be grateful for what he achieved. But handing over leadership to someone new would be the best way for him to secure his legacy, and for the NDP to secure a real shot at winning the next election. /end

Look, I like Singh. I've worked on campaigns hoping he would become PM. But the NDP is polling near single digits. His own popularity has tanked. The last party review in 2023 he won only 81% of delegates, and several provinces failed to send full delegations. Singh's time is up.

Matt Chilliak @mchilliak.bsky.social · 08/02/2025
This may sound wild, but after winning the Liberal leader position in '84, John Turner became PM despite not holding a seat. (No, Turner wasn't premier at the time, so that would be unprecedented)
110
Matt Chilliak @mchilliak.bsky.social · 08/02/2025
He could maintain the role of premier, seek leadership, abstain from any riding nomination, and run in a byelection should the NDP win and make him PM.
110
Matt Chilliak @mchilliak.bsky.social · 08/02/2025
Why Kinew? He's Canada's most popular politician (67% approval), and a generational talent when it comes to connecting with voters. There's no formal rule preventing him from seeking the position.
110
Matt Chilliak @mchilliak.bsky.social · 08/02/2025
So if not Singh, then who? Not any current NDP MPs. Too much baggage. What the federal NDP needs is a provincial leader to step into the federal arena. Specifically, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew.
