He was my thesis advisor too. His enthusiasm, energy, and never ending stream of ideas was infectious. He (along with Mark Allen) were huge influences on my life and career. I will miss him. Thank you for posting.

It's especially common in India. My kids call my female cousins "Ammayi" (... which means Aunt). I never understood this third cousin once removed nonsense.

Trader Joe's has this spiced chai latte powder. I mix it with hot water and some heavy cream. One time I just mixed it with the heavy cream and ate it all before the water boiled. If I ever kill someone and am on death row, that's what I'm requesting for my last meal.

What is the intention behind these resolutions? They seem like gotcha statements. What do you gain by playing?

And if Harris had won the pundits would have proclaimed it was a brilliant move for Biden to drop out with three months to go and a masterful strategy by the Democrats.

It's a stunning coincidence that Neptune and Jupiter had such a close conjunction just a couple of years into Galileo's observations.

I fell asleep watching this one and didn't bother to rewatch. I very much enjoyed episode 2, although I was disappointed the resolution was exactly the same as in the original series.

Any church that does so will have its tax exemption revoked because separation of church and state. Any church promoting Trump's successor will be fine because first amendment. Both arguments will be in Alito's majority opinion, maybe in the same paragraph.

Using sin(lat) is fine, but sin(lon) doesn't give enough information; you still need something for east and west hemispheres. We could use complex notation (sin(lon), cos(lon)). If the government mandated that it wouldn't even be the third worst idea this week.

110

Hari Nair @mcfiddish.bsky.social · 16/06/2025

Or we could simply use the sine and cosine of the appropriate longitude bin which would be unambiguous. I have many more such ideas if you would like to subscribe to my newsletter.

I did the same, rebalancing from 70/30 stocks/bonds to 30/70 stocks/bonds a couple of months ago (oh ... around the end of January or so). I don't know what to do if Treasuries lose their value. Buying gold is a sign I've turned into a crackpot.

What real sanctions can judges place on the administration or the lawyers who argue obviously in bad faith?

The center of mass of Jupiter and the Sun is very close to (but outside) the Sun's surface. As the sun ages it will expand. Near the end of its life it will have a hundred times or more of its current radius. Since the center of mass is no longer outside the Sun, Jupiter is no longer a planet!

I took these two images from my backyard three weeks apart. The bright object in the lower right is Uranus. It takes 84 years to go around the Sun once, so it will take several months to cross the area shown here (about four times the width of the moon).

Doesn't the debt ceiling give Trump/Musk a huge opportunity? They can cut whatever they want, and continue to spend whatever thet want? The debt ceiling may be breached but they won't get impeached. I'm going to spend the rest of the day trying to turn that into a haiku.

Tillis isn't representing North Carolina, he's only representing those who voted for him in the primary. Maybe Democrats should encourage more Republicans to go vote in the primary and make the voter pool a little more sane?

100

Hari Nair @mcfiddish.bsky.social · 15/02/2025

It seems to me that one important step we can take is to encourage more non-insane voters to take ten minutes out of primary day and actually vote.
