On 13 November 1880 the earliest known game played by St. Mark’s Church side took place in Gorton and ended in a 2-1 defeat by the Baptist Church from Macclesfield.  Both sides fielded 12 players and the first St. Mark’s goalscorer was James Collinge. There are a lot of myths about the origins of the club (some are quite infuriating!) so a while back I performed an online talk on the latest research into the origins of City.
