Another wet weekend across Southwest Ohio and once again the region’s flood protection system is quietly doing exactly what it was designed to do. 🌧️ Englewood Dam is storing floodwater. River levels are expected to rise across communities including Dayton, West Carrollton, Middletown, and Hamilton.

One of the world’s biggest trilobites was hiding in Ohio. In 1919, workers digging the Huffman Dam foundation unearthed a 450M year old trilobite — 14.5 inches. One of the largest ever found! “Pete” now lives at the Smithsonian, but the story started here. #Trilobite #DaytonHistory #Ordovician

Yes, we'd love to tell you more. Each earthen dam has large concrete openings (conduits) at the dam's base. During normal flows, the river runs through the conduits unimpeded. When the river rises to the top of the conduit, water begins to store in the storage basin upstream.

How does the system work? We'd love to tell you. It's ingeniously simple. The drainage patterns of the entire Great Miami River Watershed are incorporated into its design. The dams and levees operate without human intervention and have no moving parts except floodgates along the levees.
