Brush piles are a great way to make habitat for urban insects and amphibians. But they are too messy for most gardeners. Luckily, we can organize them like so to still provide habitat and be more aesthetically pleasing. #gardening #science #rewilding

underground spaces and they are easy to create. Simply excavate areas about the size of a one gallon pot (in colder regions go deeper, below frostline) and fill with different soils. Make shelters above and below ground. Etcetera. New book posted in the comments.

Did you really plant a prairie/meadow? or did you install plants that grow in those habitats? Most likely, it is the latter if soils aren't diversified and subterranean habitats were ignored. Wildlife need plants AND resources. New book posted in the comments. #fireflies #Crickets #Gardening

We have to stop poisoning our yards if we want to keep butterflies and bees around. Weed n feed pellets aren't just fertilizer. They kill grubs and broadleaf plants. Many even have fungicides. Going the next step is reducing your mowed areas and growing native flowers. bookshop.org/p/books/natu...

People often say let nature take its course when folks want to manage spaces...but nature is missing from our neighborhoods! We have to mimic the roles of absent animals. This includes compacting some soils, adding native plants, trimming back old vegetation. #gardening #nature #pollinators #bison

Ever wondered how bison affect the world for other wildlife?
Bison once roamed most of North America. Today they are few and far between. The habitats they created however are still needed by many extant wildlife. So we must recreate the habitats they make.

Creating pocket prairie gardens? It is important to consider the natural processes that are absent. Bison once roamed most of the USA, fertilizing habitats, breaking old stems, & grazing grasses. We can recreate these processes to make more robust #pollinator habitats. #gardening #gardencology

#Nativebees don't need messy yards. They need intentional actions that provide #habitat in our gardens. The intentional resources our #bees need are soil diversity (with species preferring Sandy, to sandy clay soil with different levels of compaction, slope, and vegetation cover).

Here's why you should be cleaning up your yard. This is a small bison herd, doing bison things. Imagine this across a landscape throughout the year. Dead vegetation is broken, trampled, & pressed to the ground. Our gardens don't have this happening so we have to cut back plants. #gardening #nature

Can a raccoon fit? A concern for #gardeners creating shelters for #wildlife are the species they consider nuisances. Modifications for foxes & opossums should have openings less than 6" diameter if raccoons aren't wanted, but larger than 5" for possums & a vertical crawl space. youtu.be/LxlHs_Z9kFo
