This is a core mechanic that is by definition diegetic. The players understand and consent, as you said, through how the game works. As far as intent goes, it sounds to me pretty deliberate and very specific! If that's really all it is and it doesn't drain a lake to do it, I suppose it is fine?

Miyamoto explaining how they divided the film in 3-minute segments and specifically designed it such that there would be something entirely new going on in each one was unfortunately very revealing, because pairing Illumination's shortcomings in writing with that philosophy becomes a dismal affair

It's maddening, cuz they do such a good job with everything visual yet limit the music to a brief quote before moving on I don't think the philosophy of grabbing attention with something new directly translates from game mechanics to film action, they're not equivalent they refuse to consider Time
