also was stunned when @greg2126.bsky.social pointed out to me that Nolan James is leading all FBS RBs (min 50 attempts) in success rate? It hasn't been pretty, and competition will amp up, but the run game is so rarely stuffed and the efficiency just keeps getting better

the CFP killed “high level bowls” and is now romanticizing them and using their absence as an argument for expansion, gtfo

a bonus graph this week - looking at second level rushing yards + success rate on offense shows what an outlier the ND rushing attack has been so far:

this will be in your inboxes soon as part of an anti-playoff expansion post, but holy shit Stanford, get it together, you're gonna distract everyone from the main point here

Among the top-10 projected teams, Notre Dame's lack of top opponents (and middle class P4 teams) stands out. If the Irish take care of business through mid October, BYU will be a big inflection point that makes November either a heartburn month or huge opportunity for revenge / CFP seeding

safe to say the Riley Leonard to CJ Carr transition completely transformed the identity of Notre Dame's passing offense

ok moratorium on the ND-Miami debate after this. But if you use yards / play as a decent proxy, and line up margins from the game's this year, you start to see why the Irish are ahead in all the metrics, even accounting for slightly better Canes SOS

an up and down CJ Carr game, with terrific throws but some loud bad plays. Irish won't see another strong defense this regular season, so a good learning experience. Great deep passes, struggles getting anything loose underneath. Behind LOS - 9 air yards: 18-23 for 124 yards

Panthers offense basically abandoned the run (33% early down run rate) because the early struggles. Terrific havoc (again) by the Irish defense. Will the Irish defense outscore the Syracuse offense this weekend? I think that's on the table if not likely

good offensive outing, spectacular defense. in the Navy review wrote about this being a game where Al Golden would put Heintschel in a blender, and Chris Ash was on that level. Pitt had 2.71 yards per dropback, pressured 51% of dropbacks, 1-7 for 17 yards on throws of 10+ air yards.

lanning is good, find where I said he sucks! the words literally just say I’m done with this fluffing til he gets it done on the biggest stages (no the big ten title that cost $2 to get in doesn’t count) If you love it, good for you, keep it moving

Taking a deep dive into the weak link of Notre Dame’s 2024 team - the passing offense. Why lack of explosiveness held the aerial attack back, hope for 2025 with a stronger group of WRs, and what we can learn about Mike Denbrock’s plans with new QBs. open.substack.com/pub/spreadsh...

Friday happy hour - is there a random CFB game you love / that made you fall for the sport? Growing up in the ATL burbs UGA vs Tech was massive always and in the late 90s both were good. This stretch (mostly listening to Larry Munson call on radio got me hooked for life

Personally would prefer to live in the multiverse where NIU was a wake up call ND survived and was a virtual lock for the playoff and favorite for a 5/6 seed, but that’s just me. Maybe let’s not presuppose the only way Marcus Freeman could win this last stretch is from losing that one?

Anyway, there just might be a pod appearance soon talking Rocky Top road trip, so dropping a few stadium highlights here. Incredible stadium experience, hope Nico is ok and they roll the Dawgs (even if that’s not ideal for playoff seeding)
