The old punk told me that lately when people see his mask they ask if he’s wearing it to fight fascism or to fight the virus, and when I asked how he responds, the old punk explained that whether you’re fighting fascism or a virus what you have to do is take care of other people.

You may have already done this and I just read the plan incorrectly, but if you can, try to keep pollinator plants back a bit from the road. Poor bees and butterflies can get smooshed! 🚗

What’s a good source for wildflower meadow maintenance? My city mows all our meadows in the winter—when wildlife need it most. I want to put together info on why that’s not the best plan. But the sources I’ve found are conflicting… #nativeplants #pollinators

I’m imagining how you could do this IRL… crafting FTW! Good job with MSpaint. Photoshop is pretty awful these days. No need to switch!

Moths also play a big role but we don’t usually see them as they’re out at night!

I wouldn’t try to separate out the tiny seedlings if they’re too close together. You’ll damage their roots. Depending on the plant, they should be OK as clumps. If they need more space, it’s good to choose the seedling that has the most leaves to keep and clip off the stem of the other one.

Did u know? It's important to plant a variety of flower shapes because pollinators can't reach all pollen & nectar from all flowers.Beetle pollinators, like this female Thick-legged flower beetle has short mouth parts,so can only reach food from flat flowers with shallow nectaries. 🌿🌱🪲🐙🐝
A pic I took of a pretty yellow daisy being pollinated by a Thick-legged Flower beetle. The daisy has a flat flower, which means the beetle can reach its food because it only has short mouth parts.

You got this! I’d recommend keeping your darling kitty indoors. Sadly, kitties kill lots of wildlife and we don’t often see it. They’re sneaky little bums! 😂

I think Monsanto makes it so the seeds the corn produces are sterile =(

Have you tried fermenting the seeds first? Tomato seeds don’t sprout without a little fermentation because otherwise they’d grow right out of the tomato on the vine! It’s a little tricky but you can get it with some trial and error.

Looks beautiful! If you can, wait to prune until a couple weeks after the last frost. That way all the insects living in the plant stems and debris will be ready to leave!

I’m having neighbors and families over and asked for suggestions. While a fun activity for consenting adults, it is not appropriate for a large group of people that includes children. I think we can agree on that.

Just an FYI, TweetDelete is pretty sus now. They say you're charged $3.99/month and then in tiny lettering it says you have to pay for 12 months. When I got the much larger charge on my credit card and tried to cancel the account, they also pointed out that they do not give refunds.

@madelinebright.bsky.social hey, how often are y’all watering your cold stratified seeds? Mine were out in their pots over winter but now I’m a tad worried since we haven’t been getting rain lately, and it’s getting warmer.

We have a lot of beekeepers here. Would we worry about it getting into their honey? I know that most honey in the US has glyphosate in it. Of course, maybe it’s an OK risk if it eventually gives them more habitat so they don’t outcompete native bees…

I dunno. I’ve found nativars at supposedly all native nurseries. Maybe they just didn’t know? But it’s disheartening that I have to research EVERYTHING before planting and can’t trust the source.

These are important questions! As a #nativeplants landscaper, I learn about the cultural and spiritual uses of plants in our area and try to share that with others. I also think it’s important to support and donate to local tribes. It’s not enough, but it is a small start.

Interesting. I’m a native plant landscaper and I haven’t had this issue in the DC area. Maybe we need to make info more readily available to homeowners? There’s actually a lot of options for smaller spaces.

Pine needles add a lot of acidity to the soil. Plus, the roots can prevent other plants from getting the nutrients they need. I personally would focus on other areas of your yard. Or plant in some pots!

Make sure to Google each plant before you buy it. Some native nurseries sell “cultivars” which are native plants bred to look prettier. Wildlife won’t recognize them as easily. Best to get the OG plants!
