11 June 1908 | A Dutch Jewish woman, Rachel Vredenburg, was born in Amsterdam. In May 1944 she was deported from #Westerbork to #Auschwitz. She did not survive.

Pilgrimage accomplished. Visited Old St. Joseph Cemetery and the Sisters of Mercy graves this afternoon. This included Mother Francis Xavier Warde's grave and those of the first Sisters of Mercy at Manchester, NH.

26 June 1939 | Dutch Jewish girl, Helena Wilhelmina Polak, was born in Groningen. In February 1943 she was deported to #Auschwitz from Westerbork and murdered in a gas chamber after arrival selection together with her younger brother Abraham.

Recalling travel from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh in Dec 1843, w 1 leg a 2-night journey by stagecoach, a "heavy clumsy concern," that fit 9 people (7 sisters & 2 men) a Sister of Mercy reported: "Passing the night in it was quite a penitential exercise." Oh, sister, tell me more. #nuntastic

In 1907, Eugene Debs joined the staff of Appeal to Reason, a Socialist newspaper based in Girard, Kansas. His wife Katherine formed personal and professional relationships with some of the women instrumental to the paper's success, especially Grace Babbitt Brewer, the head of the Appeal Army.
