Tonight, Jewish New Yorkers mark the start of Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. It is the peak of the Yamim Noraim, the Days of Awe, and an opportunity for profound reflection.

For those fasting — tzom kal, may your fast be easy and meaningful.

And to all who observe, G'mar chatimah tovah. May you be sealed in the Book of Life for a good year to come.

What better way to show off our city to 50 visiting mayors than from the roof of a double decker bus?

After 343 FDNY members made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11, thousands more began the search for survivors. They spent months at Ground Zero searching, caring for their fellow New Yorkers and helping our city recover from this unspeakable tragedy.

Last night’s severe storms brought heavy rain, flooding, strong winds, and significant disruptions across the city. New York City government and first responders are working hard to address the impacts.

If your home, business, or nonprofit was damaged, document it and report it at reportdamage.nyc.gov. These reports help the City understand where damage occurred and delivery recovery assistance to the neighborhoods most in need.

A damage report does not replace a 311 service request. Use @nyc311 for conditions that require a City response, including basement or street flooding, sewer backups, downed trees, structural concerns, mold, or blocked catch basins.

Conditions are expected to remain mostly clear today, but another round of storms are possible this weekend. New Yorkers should use today to document damage, address immediate needs, and prepare for additional rainfall.

For updates, text NOTIFYNYC to 692-692. Preparedness information is available at nyc.gov/beready

New York, plan now for dangerous weather during your commute this evening.

Storms are rolling in this afternoon, and will bring heavy rain and potential flash flooding to our city, hitting hardest during peak commuting hours.

If rainfall is heavy, winds are strong, or you hear thunder, please wait to travel. Never drive through floodwaters.

If you are trapped or in immediate danger, call 911. Report downed trees, blocked catch basins, and other non-emergency hazards to 311.

City workers are out preparing our infrastructure, and our emergency response crews are ready to help New Yorkers through the storm.

Do your part by planning ahead and looking out for your neighbors.

I am heartbroken by the death earlier today of a New Yorker who was in City custody and receiving medical care at the Outposted Therapeutic Housing Unit at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, a facility dedicated to those with acute medical needs.

My thoughts are with his loved ones as they grieve this tragic loss.

As is protocol for any death in City custody, the Department of Correction and its oversight partners will conduct a full investigation into the circumstance surrounding it.
