I feel like a bit of historical distance helps to soften the problems. Obviously Bronze age stuff or Napoleonics can still be a vehicle for a lot of racism in the miniatures and rules design, but it sidesteps the problem of "hey bud, why are your Waffen SS guys so lovingly and accurately painted?"
