I fail to see how the Queensland hate speech laws will stand up. A phrase like 'from the river to the sea' is a longstanding call representing the movement against Israeli colonialism. I would expect the High Court to strike this down soon, as it infringes on the right to political communication.

The weather in Perth is a bit dicey right now 😬

I was wondering if there were any way to make providing ID to access websites more private. Does anyone more techy than me know, would it be possible to create ID local to the device? Show your device your ID then it communicates with the website saying 'yep OK'.

A very exciting encounter at Kelmscott Station for me yesterday: a train running at speed along the platform!
A train passing through Kelmscott Station (A-series set 218, 2 car). The display reads 'Test Train'.

It's been a busy few days for me :) I want to present: The first iteration of my improved train services map for Perth! As inspired by cphtransitmap.dk, the concept aims to simplify and beautify the Transperth map. I may make further versions for legibility, accessibility, and additional features.
A map of train services in the Perth metropolitan area; shows all lines in addition to water with a depth quality. It also includes a change where lines are branded with a letter for better access. Lines have also been combined (see below), without making any modifications to the actual infrastructure.

A = Airport, B = Armadale, C = Mandurah-Yanchep, E = Ellenbrook, F = Fremantle-Midland, T = Thornlie-Cockburn, W = Whitfords-Cockburn.

If you take public transport in Perth and have ever wondered why we, unlike many other cities, don't have live service tracking in third-party apps: I wrote to Transperth and got this reply back. Unfortunate, because I would love to use other apps to fully replace the Transperth app.
An email from Transperth:

Hi Cameron,

Thank you for contacting Transperth regarding the availability of GTFS Realtime data.

Unfortunately, the Public Transport Authority (PTA) does not currently offer real-time data access to any third-party applications for publication purposes. We do make our spatial data available to download in the form of a GTFS Static feed, however I understand that you are after real-time data which we are unable to provide at this time.

While the PTA’s current priority is to provide accurate and up-to-date information directly through its own services (Transperth app), so that our customers have the best access to the information they require, the PTA recognises the importance of the real-time data to other parties and is currently working towards allowing this data to be used by selected authorised third parties, such as Google Maps, in the near future.

I hope the above has provided additional information and we thank you again for contacting Transperth.

Kind regards,

Transperth

This may be showing how young I am, but I don't have Facebook. I went over there to check out Metronet's progress because that seems to be their primary mode of communication, and made the mistake of looking in the comments. Do all the commenters share a single braincell?! Made me sad for society.

I created this map: a 2km radius around Perth's train & bus stations. This is a 20min walk for a healthy, fit person, and a 5 minute bike ride — the maximum for a comfortable trip, in my opinion. It shows where Perth's biggest public transport gaps are. See alt text for the key.
A map of Perth, from Yanchep to Mandurah, showing a 2km radius around bus & train stations. Yellow = train w/ bike shelter, red = train w/o; aqua = bus w/ shelter, blue = bus w/o.

It shows significant gaps between the Fremantle and Mandurah lines, between the Ellenbrook & Yanchep lines and along much of the coast.A map of Perth, from Currambine to Aubin Grove/Armadale, showing a 2km radius around train and bus stations. Mathematically, we now know that every time Hulkenberg scores a podium, the Red Bull team principal gets sacked. It is a perfect correlation — which definitely implies causation... #F1

Nuclear sites in Iran have been bombed — does that mean those sites are now irradiated? How bad is the fallout and other associated environmental damages? I haven't seen anyone ask this question today, so what kind of impact have the strikes had?

My proposal (fantasy?) for regional rail in Western Australia. This would be just the start; lines extending north toward the Pilbara + additional lines in the south & south-west would follow. But as a start, this uses mostly pre-existing track & rights of way.

A lot of people online seem to have forgotten with this mushroom deaths case — the point is that someone can only be punished if they are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. People responding to the latest news always say 'Oh, so you admit she lied' — but lying proves nothing. Public scrutiny, I know.

An octopus was killed at a beach today. A lovely, curious, gentle octopus, who I had been watching for days, got a little too close to spearfishers. It was killed, for the simple crime of not knowing better. For its sweet, inquisitive nature. I doubt anyone else will care too much, but I'm crushed.

For anyone interested in the minutiae of the Transperth network, here is a comparison of the current system map and the new one on the Thornlie-Cockburn Line brochure. The largest changes are the open Thornlie-Cockburn & Armadale (to Cannington) lines & a new Cannington-Bull Creek key bus corridor.
The present (Dec 2024) system map for Perth public transport. Features closed trains from Victoria Park to Thornlie & Armadale, and a number of key bus corridors. The Transperth system map as included in the Thornlie-Cockburn Line brochure (https://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/Portals/0/Asset/Documents/Brochures/TCL%20Brochure.pdf). Notable changes to the current version include: The opening of the full (lilac-coloured) Thornlie-Cockburn Line, the reopening of the Armadale Line to Cannington, the addition of a key bus corridor from Cannington to Bull Creek, a change in the label of Byford, the exclusion of ‘buses replace trains’ on closed track, the changed layout of the Yanchep-Mandurah exchange between Perth Underground & Elizabeth Quay, and minor (probably stylised) colour changes.

Here's my shot at creating a pipe-dream transit map for Perth, featuring additional train lines and a network of trams. I tried to keep it somewhat realistic :) #train #transit #transitmap #diagram #transitdiagram #perth
Proposed new transit diagram for the Perth metropolitan area. It shows 9 train lines (Serpentine, Midland, Fremantle, Yanchep, Mandurah, Airport, Circle, Wanneroo, Ellenbrook), and 7 tram lines (Scarborough, Inner South, South, Central, North, Loop, Sunset Coast). Also displays a number of stations as ferry stops along the Swan and Canning Rivers.

The slogan of 'Keep the Sheep', protesting WA's live export ban, is kinda terrible. For one, it doesn't effectively communicate the intentions of the group (keep the sheep... in WA?) For another, graffiti is so easy. Scribble 'Suffering' under it and boom, animal rights slogan.

Honestly how long will it be until the US armed forces & intelligence services, whose top officials have spent years trying to combat Russia & authoritarianism, just get fed up with Trump and put his administration to rest? I will not be shocked when US troops storm the White House.

I've seen some jokes on Reddit about the NATO (joke) alternative 'Pacific Ocean Trans Atlantic Treaty Organization' (POTATO), but genuinely an alliance of the EU, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, Japan, and Korea, calling itself the 'Atlantic & Pacific Treaty Organisation' would be really cool

Peter Dutton has gone (by extension) with the line of 'I love Russia and I hate democracy'. He is perhaps the least electable potato in Australian history – the aging potatoes in the back of my cupboard would be better Prime Ministers.

mmk so what the us needs rn is a shadow government made by people preferably unaffiliated with the dems, made up of people who know what they're doing, can counteract trump, claim legitimacy, run important services. funds come from billionaires & the public, plus manipulating trumpy corruption

Here's what I genuinely don't get. Clearly what's happening in the US is the administration is trying to surround itself with people either too compliant or too dumb to resist the undermining of democracy and constitutionalism. But it's not Trump's doing, he's not smart enough. Who organised this?

Keep your messaging simple: “Trump fired everyone in charge of airplane safety, and a week later planes started crashing into each other.” That’s it. That’s the messaging. Don’t get bogged down disputing Trump’s false claims. Just blame him, in short and repeatable sentences.

I can't wait for Trump to do nothing but blame DC officials for this disaster, because the city is mostly run by Democrats. He will not offer anything. Donald Trump is a toxic, uncaring individual. An utter tragedy will be marred by the presence of Trump in the White House. Stand strong, Americans.

The highest compliment from someone who disagrees with you is not “You were right.” It’s “You made me think.” Good arguments help us recognize complexity where we once saw simplicity. The ultimate purpose of debate is not to produce consensus. It’s to promote critical thinking.

Let's make this clear: what we are witnessing in the US is a descent into an undemocratic oligarchy controlled by technofascists. It is the responsibility of the people, as US citizens, to rise up and ensure the security of the democracy their ancestors fought for time and time again.
