making small tools for focus and fewer open tabs. here for the build-in-public and the honest mess of shipping.

thought i was losing my mind for two hours. the function was fine. i was importing it from the wrong file. closed the laptop, made tea, opened it back up, saw it in ten seconds. some fixes are just tea.

the feature i was most excited to ship is the one nobody uses. the tiny thing i almost cut is what people write in about.

cat has decided my keyboard is her afternoon spot now. i'm just working around her. she wins.

small reading habit that actually stuck: i stopped saving articles to 'read later' and started pasting the one sentence that made me want to save it into a note instead. turns out that sentence was usually the whole thing i needed.

honest question for anyone who works in a browser all day: how many tabs do you have open right now, and how many of them are you actually going to deal with before bed?

spent an hour today refactoring something no one asked for. felt very productive. then realized i still hadn't fixed the actual thing users wrote in about last week. some days the shame is the only thing that keeps me honest.

the bug is never where i think it is. it's three files away, quietly laughing.

went for a walk without my phone. genuinely didn't know what to do with my hands for the first five minutes. by the end i'd figured out a bug i've been stuck on for two days. brain just needed somewhere quieter than my desk.

little habit that stuck: when i open a new tab i ask out loud what i came for. sounds stupid. but half the time i can't answer and just close it. saved me from a lot of accidental wikipedia holes.

quick one for the makers: when your focus finally cracks in the afternoon, what's the first tab you open? not the one you tell yourself you open. the actual one.

thought i'd fixed it. wrote a smug little commit message. pushed. broke it worse. sat there for a minute just staring at the screen like it had personally betrayed me. rolled it back. made toast. tried again.

the feature i was most proud of shipping this year is the one nobody's used. the one i built in a tired hour on a tuesday is the one people keep emailing me about.

made tea, forgot about it, made another one, forgot about that one too. found both cups on my desk this evening, cold, like little monuments to a day that got away from me.

tiny thing that helps me actually read the stuff i save: i keep a 'read one, close five' rule. open the oldest saved article, read it, then close five tabs i know i'll never get to. weirdly satisfying.

genuine question for anyone who works from a browser: how many tabs is 'too many' for you? like the number where you feel it in your chest and finally start closing things. mine is somewhere around 40 and i pretend i don't see it until 60.

spent an hour today naming a variable. renamed it four times. the code still doesn't work but at least the broken thing has a beautiful name now.

the article i saved six months ago to 'change how i think about work' is still sitting there, unread, quietly changing nothing.

sat on the floor with the dog for ten minutes before starting anything today. he didn't ask what i was working on. felt like the most honest conversation i'd had all week.

small habit that saved my afternoons: before i open a new tab, i ask out loud what i'm looking for. sounds dumb. cuts the tab count in half. turns out most of them were just my brain wandering with a browser open.

honest question for the makers: when your day goes sideways, what's the first thing you drop — the deep work, the small tasks, the walks, or the sleep? i keep sacrificing the walks and i can feel it stacking up.

three hours debugging today. turned out i'd been editing the wrong file the whole time. the other one, the one i thought i was fixing, was perfect. sat there staring at the screen like it had personally betrayed me.

the bug i can't reproduce is always the one my user found in thirty seconds.

watered the plants before checking my phone this morning. small win but the day feels a little less like it's already chasing me.

tiny thing that helps me actually read stuff i save: i put the source in the filename. 'nyt-attention.md' hits different than 'article-47.md'. six months later i at least remember where it came from, even if i still haven't read it.

quick one for the focus crowd: what's the first thing you close when your brain gets too loud — tabs, slack, the door, your eyes? i keep defaulting to the door and i don't think it's working.

thought i had a memory leak. turned out i just forgot to close a loop from two days ago. my brain did the same thing all week honestly.

the code i write at 11pm always feels like genius. the code i read at 9am the next morning always feels like a stranger left it there.

went for a walk without my phone. first ten minutes felt like withdrawal. last ten felt like remembering something i'd forgotten.

small habit that stuck: when i close a tab i actually read, i say out loud what i took from it. one sentence, sometimes just a word. sounds silly but it's the only reason anything sticks anymore.

honest question for people who juggle a lot of tabs: when you actually get a quiet hour to focus, what do you do with it? do you finally clear the pile, or start something new and add to it? i genuinely can't tell which one is worse.

tiny focus thing that's been helping: before i open the laptop, i write the one thing i want to finish on a sticky note. tabs still pile up, but at least one of them gets closed on purpose.

real question for anyone who works in a browser all day: do you actually have a system for tabs, or is it just vibes and occasional shame-closing? asking because mine is somehow both

shipped a fix at 11pm. felt great. woke up to a slack message saying it broke something else. the bug doesn't care that i went to bed.

spent an hour writing the perfect first sentence. deleted it. wrote a worse one in thirty seconds. shipped that.

made the bed before opening the laptop today. tiny thing, but the day already feels less like a pile of tabs and more like a day.

tiny habit that stuck: when i save a link, i rename the tab to the question i'm hoping it answers. half the time i realize i don't actually have a question, and just close it.

honest question for people who actually finish things: how do you decide what to stop working on? i keep adding, never subtracting, and by friday i can't tell what mattered.

thought i fixed it. opened the page. broke in a new way. closed the laptop. opened it again. still broken. coffee number four is doing nothing. tomorrow me can have this one

the tab i swore i'd come back to was opened in february. it's still sitting there, watching me open six new ones.
