Novelist, comedian, framer, is there anything that man cannot do?

I guess I’m imagining a 500 person or whatever company wide email and that feels like a lot for only a potential faux pas.

The problem is the reactions show to everyone on the email, but not super obviously. People might have seen it, they might not have, and do you really want to make it about you by emailing around something like that.

I think there are parts of society that don’t get exposed to public information campaigns the same as in the past. And it’s not like theres a huge amount of time for a proper campaign sink in. It sort of is an emergency. It’s kind of a shame that there isn’t a non-alarm version of the same thing.

OTOH, wildfires are bad, and given where we are, stopping people from accidentally setting them off is a good thing.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladys_... She had a fairly well recognised career where she was given credit for the work she did that contributed to GPS. She’s not solely responsible for GPS, no-one is. I’m not aware of the names of anyone responsible for GPS, perhaps outside of the fundamental physics.

This is a genuinely terrible take, 100% demonstrates the issue of selfish, self-centred Americans on the internet.

No, just Meta ones. I think it’s helpful that your head is self-stabilising, and telling it to start taking a video without taking hands off the controls is helpful. I don’t think any of them are online enough to be aware of the creepy uses. (And one uses AI image gen a lot in a very boomer way)

A lot of people I paraglide with use them - the video that comes out has a lot better framing than GoPro, and it’s quite useful to be able to see what you were looking at/focussing on. It’s very annoying when they talk to their glasses though, especially if you think they are talking to you.

Ignoring that it’s a boring way of looking at the world, “just develop a non-stick frying pan” doesn’t work as the funding for the science wouldn’t exist. Noone funds billions on the low chance you might make a better pan. So much progress comes from serendipity, and space projects accelerate that.

No idea where you’ve got this from, but the UK also has an adversarial system. In most criminal cases the Crown Prosecution Service is the prosecutor, and there is a defence. A jury or judge then decides. Some of Europe has something more inquisitorial, but the US system is based on the UK one.

Yes, but when you sign the giftaid form for are essentially saying ‘I won’t claim this back on my tax return’. I’ve looked it up now though, and it turns out you can still claim a bit back if you’re a higher rate taxpayer.

Doesn’t Giftaid mean you can’t deduct the donation from taxes as you’ve essentially given the tax benefit to the charity?

I guess the problem is that the trucks provide a service locally that wouldn't work in a different location, whilst a data centre could be built anywhere, and the local benefit is minimal.
010
maxwellash.bsky.social @maxwellash.bsky.social · 27/11/2025
But they are paying for the energy/water/etc. that they are using... and the data centres are providing a service that people need* similarly to trucks. (* need is obviously subjective here, but they aren't building them for fun.)

maxwellash.bsky.social @maxwellash.bsky.social · 27/11/2025
The trucking business does use the publicly paid for roads, which they damage more than other users (because road damage scales with weight non-linearly).

This is a much smaller risk that random website X holding personal details! (And sorry for messaging your personal account about this - I couldn't find Hard Fork on Bluesky)
000
maxwellash.bsky.social @maxwellash.bsky.social · 01/08/2025
Sure, it's hard to completely remove that risk under this model - but the way you discussed it on the podcast suggested that websites needed to keep databases of ID - this just isn't true. The ID checking companies have a strong incentive to delete personal data because GDPR can mean *massive* fines

maxwellash.bsky.social @maxwellash.bsky.social · 01/08/2025
Or, indeed, whether it does impact freedom of speech. Either way, if we do have to have age checks, I think I would rather have an ecosystem of age verification companies to handing things off to Apple or Google, not sure we need to give American tech companies more control over the internet.

Hyperbole around the privacy risks overshadows discussion around other aspects, like is it actually going to protect anyone (suspect not) or whether its too wide (clearly wikipedia shouldn't be affected, but 'stop smoking' subreddits being affected is down to reddit not categorising things well)
100
maxwellash.bsky.social @maxwellash.bsky.social · 01/08/2025
I've not come across any site not promising to do this. It's possible, I guess that they could still be storing them and there might be a big leak, but GDPR is a pretty robust incentive not to do this. (And the OSA requires privacy preserving methods of verification where possible).
100
maxwellash.bsky.social @maxwellash.bsky.social · 01/08/2025
@caseynewton.bsky.social - did you do any research on how the OSA is actually implemented before talking about it on HardFork? Websites don't have to store databases of peoples selfies or ID - most seem to be using verification services that delete the id after verification.

@trientertainment.bsky.social A meta-question - I've just had a weird bug where the advert for the last of us was half read by Marina talking to Richard, but the Richard voice was someone else. How does advertising on podcasts work? Do you write or agree the things you say?

You aren't going to get very far if you ignore the fact that actually, a tonne of people voted for Trump, a tonne of people didn't care enough to vote. They explicitly or implicitly support Trump, none of this is a surprise. If you get to vote in four years (who knows?!), they are who you need.

If you think people who voted for Jill Stein hold some responsibility, then (kind of by definition, because the net effect is the same) people who didn't vote hold responsibility too. Actually, not caring at all is morally worse in my opinion.
