The new 4K restoration of Martin Ritt’s HUD (1963), photographed by James Wong Howe and starring Paul Newman and Patricia Neal, is now available on 4K and Blu-ray from Criterion: https://www.criterion.com/films/30203-hud Presented here is an excerpt from a new interview with Roger Deakins, where the celebrated cinematographer discusses Howe's beautifully austere (and Academy Award-winning) work on Ritt’s quietly subversive reimagining of western myths. How do you think you’d react if you found out that you had been carefully selected by your parents from 100 of their embryos because of your likely traits and temperament based on 3d modelling? Thank you. Thumbnail artwork by Henrietta Harris
