Depiction of a scene from my original series Dreamwar, drawn by @birb-o-fluff.bsky.social Cross-faded version, Mepria's pov version, and Mepria's expression standalone. Scene info in alt text. Other characters & info in previous posts & other socials. #indieseries #IndieAnimation
This would be the second-to-last scene of episode 2, where we see what Mepria sees when she happens to look south-southwest during dusk while at the Sleetfjord harbor. Amidst the withdrawn, disconnected state she has been in since leaving her homeland behind and coming to Denali, she experiences a rare moment of actual surprise and wonder. Here she sees aeroplanes in the sky in-person for the first time.

Since the world Dreamwar is set in is roughly equivalent to the early-mid 1920s, similar to how it was at the time in our reality, the fact that “flying machines” were a legitimate thing that existed had become common knowledge, but things were not yet at a point where everyone had seen them or was used to having them around.

Actually seeing them in-flight herself leads her to inquire to go with Elemme to the airfield where Andim, Ash and Ban are training, and eventually to become a biplane pilot herself as the war begins.

General series info : Taking place in a different world from our own, one where both humans and anthro animals, called "uprights", exist. Set in a timeframe technologically equivalent to the early 1920s, and with a global war looming on the immediate horizon.
Humans are more dominant globally simply owing to fact, in the end, that different human groups can all interbreed while differing species Uprights cannot, so humans almost always had a numbers advantage in most scenarios.
Some nations are equal for all, many are “humans first”, some are “humans only”, and others are either “Uprights first” or “Uprights only.” However, despite the human vs upright angle being the one many governments and their people lean on the most, looking past the supposed “us vs them” solidarity will reveal discrimination between individual races of humans against each other, and likewise between differing upright species.

Ash and Ban, secondary characters in my would-be 2D original series Dreamwar. Artwork done by the project's concept artist, the immeasurably talented @birb-o-fluff.bsky.social Info on these 2 in the alt text, other characters and more info in previous posts.
Ash, on the left, is a 22-year-old human, and Ban, on the right, is a 19-year-old cat upright (upright is this world's term for furries/anthros, shorthand for "upright animals").

Both are from the nation of Denali, same as Andim, and are both biplane pilots in their country’s only air squadron alongside him.

Ash is an encouraging and protective person, always wanting to make sure those around him don't feel inadequate or as if they've failed. He is the only family his remaining little brother Moon has left, and while away in the aeroplane squadron, he treats Ban like a little brother as well, much to Ban’s annoyance. He (partly) first became a pilot because his little brother Moon thought it would be the coolest thing.

Ban, meanwhile, is far more “prickly” or non-personable, frequently written off as antisocial, prone to more snide remarks and consistently critical with no filter. He's even against Mepria being allowed into the squadron since she’s a lady. Although the more easily dislikable, Ban is actually on the same “moral page”, and actually the most morally impulsive of the group, having the least amount of hesitancy and near zero aversion to risking himself.

Mepria is a 21-year-old female cat upright from the nation of Ingastalli (a rough fictional equivalent of Italy) , a “humans first” nation.

A quieter, more stoic girl, the threshold for her to smile is set high, though it grows more easier after leaving her prior environment and as the series goes on. Naturally gifted at stonewalling any effort to get her to concede.

Up until episode 1, she had lived with her parents in the Upright segregated housing district of the port city Pecha. She grew up without electricity, as it had not entirely become common in Ingastalli yet to begin with, and even if it had been, most Uprights could not afford it.

Speaks Ingastalliano (Italian), can speak Wallaesh (English) pretty well, and can understand a fair bit of Fleuragnais (French).

Before immigrating in episode 1, she had taken over as the primary income earner for herself and her parents after her dad was barred from working as punishment for defending himself.

She immigrates to Denali after her parents plead with her to upon seeing the opportunity, and she very reluctantly leaves them behind when they choose not to come along.

Feels great internalized uncertainty and distress over wanting to be back where everything is familiar and everyone speaks her own language, but just as much wanting to remain in Denali where she is completely free. Struggles constantly with yearning for a place where her language is spoken and where uprights are also free and equal, but knowing that no such place at the time exists. She becomes driven by the desire for no one else to ever again be forced to feel like she has, or into a similar situation, leading to her joining the war.

Having loved the physicality, turn-leaning and wind-in-face of riding bicycles, she becomes drawn to aeroplanes upon seeing them in person for the first time, eventually becoming a biplane pilot as the war begins. She becomes part of Denali’s small, only air squadron, alongside Andim, Ash, and Ban.

Elemme, from my series Dreamwar. Posted her husband Andim a few days ago. For broader series lore/info, see longer posts on Tumblr or DeviantArt (or feel free to ask on any platform) Character info in alt text Art by @birb-o-fluff.bsky.social #originalseries #indiecartoon #anthrofox #furry
Elemme is a female fox upright from Fleuragne (fictional France)

26 at the start of the series, she is married to Andim. She was and still is the primary initiative taker between the two of them, frequently convincing him to go to things he otherwise wouldn’t.

Sociable but not overly extroverted, she enjoys chatting with others and going to smaller social events, but she doesn’t feel the intense need to like a traditional extrovert would. Her demeanor is generally bright and often playful

Becomes close friends with Mepria after the latter’s arrival in episode 2, bonding over both missing home and being culturally and linguistically displaced, even though Elemme chose to do so willingly.

Worked as a translator at various embassies in Fleuragne, where she and Andim met when he was diplomatically visiting. Now she works as part-time translator for Fleuragne’s small embassy in Denali when needed, while also beginning to work as a fill-in teacher for school children. She can speak Fleuragnais (French), Wallaesh (English), and Krentsch (German).

Shares her husband’s moral alignment and strength of conviction about ending all preferentialism, oppression and lingering colonialism, regardless of whether it’s humans or uprights committing it. Though she is not as socially abrasive about it.

Loves the snow and cold of Denali, though she admits she does wish it had more fleursoir or “french things” available, and insists the french bread in Denali’s shops is not up to the true standard of home.

Spends both her own and her husband’s money buying sweets and pastries, or the ingredients to bake them, and bringing them to orphan care schools that otherwise wouldn’t have any. Wants to adopt a couple after the war, as she and Andim can’t physically have any.

Is reflexively fearful of Andim flying aeroplanes. Also harbors a quiet but inescapable fear that Andim might actually want to die in the global conflict that is coming.

Andim, focal character of Dreamwar. My would-be 2D animated series, follows characters in a time of tense change and war, enduring and eventually refusing to idly witness the cruelty of the world around them. Charater info in alt text Art by @birb-o-fluff.bsky.social #indieanimation #indieseries #
From left to right, top to bottom: Andim gripping the railing of the bridge wing of the N.S. Ursa, Andim combating nausea while training to be a biplane pilot in secret, and Andim seeing his wife Elemme again after being away for weeks.

Andim is a young man from the nation of Denali, 26 at the beginning of the show.

He is the son of his nation’s governor, and has had a mostly privileged life, as well as even having an unofficial position of government and diplomatic authority from both nepotism and their country's small population.

Introverted but not shy.

He is perpetually ill / nauseous to varying degrees as a result of incurable illness, and visibly appears so, along with appearing tired from lack any proper sleep due to a mix of his illness and more so his stress over upcoming events.

Married to Elemme, a female fox Upright from Fleuragne (fictional France)

As he’s become an adult, he’s grown zealous about bringing an end to oppression of Uprights (anthros/furries) by humans in nations where it occurs, and vice-versa, that of humans by Uprights in the rarer case of nations where such occurs. Just as much so wants to see the end of occupations and colonies that lingering empires are still clinging onto.

Resigned to existing in the shadow of his father’s permanent disapproval, which he interprets from their consistent conflict, usually a result of Andim failing or refusing to act or see as pragmatically as his dad would desire.

Andim is torn inside and pre-emptively self-condemning, knowing a global war is inevitable but finding himself in some part actually wanting there to be one instead of not, because of his dreams it could result in liberation for at least some regions, or even imperial collapses. While he dreams as much, he knows that dream is delusional, or at least he’s been led to believe so.

His country, Denali, is an amalgamation of Alaska, Yukon & British Columbia. Their world is technologically equivalent to the early 1920s.
