As a father who runs with my baby son, I am surprised how often I get words of encouragement from strangers for doing so. Family-friendly communities begin and end with whether we systematically prioritize safely moving around outside of a car: www.ipr.northwestern.edu/news/2017/ne...

The mind cannot conceive of walking a cumulative one hour a weekday, you will get injured?
A lot of folks here start preaching health. If it is 35 mins walking one way, you are essentially walking an hour everyday. Easy for folks to think they can do it, not when you are 5 days a week to office year after year, and your job comes first in everything. You'll start to feel that on your knees soon.

Otoh, if you can manage a bike as someone said, it is doable.

They get it:
Barrin92: "is that accurate? Here in Germany minimal Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung is I believe 7 million in personal injuries and 1 million in property damages. So if a broke guy in the US runs you over and causes you half a million in health damages, puts you out of work and totals your car you'll get 30k from their insurance? How can you legally let people on the road like this"

Besides out-of-pocket costs that consumers pay to drive, the public costs of driving are at minimum an annual $2.15 trillion drag on the US economy:
Driving in the US costs $2.15 trillion a year beyond what drivers pay, or $8,350 per passenger vehicle: $5,400 from crashes, $1,430 from air pollution, $980 from climate damage, and $540 from noise and other costs.

The cost of car crashes eclipse the cost of pollution from driving:
Worldwide, crashes cost $3.98 trillion a year, split between deaths and injuries, about twice the $1.98 trillion from air pollution, climate damage, and noise

It's a close race:
A new car costs its driver 77 cents a mile, mostly depreciation, fuel, insurance, and repairs. The driver does not pay another 76 cents a mile, 49 cents of it from crashes and the rest from air pollution, climate damage, noise, and other costs

My solution has been to stroller jog him (to daycare). It gets me a ton of exercise and baby bonding. But there are also carseat adapters for cargo bikes which we are now using until he sits upright in the bike

I of course agree that the dogpile is not productive. But both the 12 and the 7-stories at N Berkeley BART were mixed income with the same nonprofit developers. The lower height limit means fewer people will live at a BART station. That's why Peter's transit question today stings:

Lack of sidewalks and bike lanes has risen 60% over the past 5 years as a safety problem feared by CA drivers:

76% more Californians feel comfortable driving on a road with a protected bike lane than with just a painted bike lane--protected bike lanes aren't just protecting bicyclists, they are protecting drivers:

You have to imagine that the e-moto backlash has influenced perceptions of bicycle riding legality, with only 6 in 10 Californians believing it is legal to ride a bicycle on roadways where there is no bike lane (for the record it is absolutely legal):

Northern California, home of Waymo, Cruise & Zoox is most pessimistic about autonomous vehicles improving roadway safety:

That being said, self-reported driving is undeniably in real decline:

mmautner @maxmautner.com · 03/09/2026
Only 5-6% of Californians blame roadway collisions on roadway design as most important factor. Human error & lack of enforcement is the majority choice (source is CA office of transportation safety, 2005 survey). The reality is that the electorate are not traffic engineers:
