Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Weekend project. Now I can enjoy a good tv show while working out. 030
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 27/09/2026It's a rainy day, and I haven't done anything in a while. So, I coded some tiny transition animations on the Workbench manipulators. Low effort, kind of fun. 1191
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Does he bring it back? My first maine coon did, the one Ihave now doesn’t. 110
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 13/09/2026So apparently ChatGPT invites people to generate 80s pictures. I wasn’t one of the cool kids, so I thought this generated alternate take was fun enough to post. 231

Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 01/09/2026So is it good or bad luck to cast a right handed dice with your left hand? 000
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 16/08/2026One of the problem to me is how to minimize test overhead code and compile times, and most frameworks I have used adds a LOT to the project making them unsuitable for white box testing. And with agentic workflows, tests arguably become one of the most important aspect of your system. 110
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 16/08/2026I haven’t developer much lately, too busy at work. But perhaps I could post some light reading about some of the stuff I have done in the previous year… Anyone interested in how to design a good unit testing framework? One for lightweight white-box testing (my favorite style). 1210
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 05/08/2026Cheers, i need a night sleep, tomorrow will be better. 010
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 16/07/2026Definitely use it. To me that should be foundational knowledge, not some confusing obscure construct one is forgiven for not knowing. It wouldn’t even cross my mind not. 020
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 14/07/2026I got charged extra because I forgot to rewind the rental VHS. 020
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 10/07/2026It’s not even that. Old films had huge technical constraints, so the film maker was using smart cinematography to limit what the spectator saw, letting the imagination do the rest. Modern movies do the opposite: show everything and leave nothing to the imagination. Huge negative! 130

For CPU ray tracing, it is now the fastest option in most cases - Outperforming Intel Embree and Madmann91 for BVH build time and single-ray performance. On GPU, performance exceeds 4B rays per second - 4 rays per pixel at 4k/120Hz. github.com/jbikker/tiny... 68120
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 09/07/2026Very nice!! When I’ll find some time and energy, I’ll try to replace the home grown CPU raytracer in Workbench (my hobby project) with TinyBVH. 110
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 04/07/2026Yes, it was like that for me at AL, and at Pixar to some extent. At AL someone was calling me at their floor to show an issue, I was going back at my desk with a guess of what it could be. Maybe 2 hours later I had a patch ready and deployed, everyone happy. It was very intense work, but fulfilling. 010
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 04/07/2026What helps me is to know who I am coding for, the user. And I don’t mean the profile of the typical customer, I mean the actual person, like a TD or a lighter who has a problem I want to fix. That is the best motivation to me. 110
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 04/07/2026Tom’s is an interesting take. For instance, I do enjoy implementing my own ideas, because it feels an extension of the thought process, so to that is like writing. But a lot of work doesn’t benefit of that. It’s like saying, I like writing… a novel, yes; but not the phone book. 100
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 04/07/2026I like using tools when they are good. Some times commercial tools aren’t great and that’s the motivator for me to open an IDE and start typing… Otherwise I don’t like coding, even less to read or review code. 100
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 13/06/2026People who bought SpaceX thinking what they bought is an aerospace company 🤦🏻♂️ What they got instead is a tiny share of xAI, and a minuscule one of aerospace sector. 160
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 09/06/2026I mean, the 5D mkii still takes really good pictures, perhaps not in low light… still. 120
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 09/06/2026I should check that. Compact cameras never clicked with me (I guess pun intended?) so, it’s either a replacement for the 5D, or I know it’ll go in a drawer in no time… But probably I should get back in the habit of carrying around the 5D, and take pictures with that… and see if I find joy in it. 120
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 09/06/2026I still have a Canon 5D mkii with a handful of lenses. I haven’t used it a long time. If I’d have to modernize the rig, what should I go for? I used to know these things but I have been out of the loop for to long now. 120
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 02/06/2026I don’t know much on the subject. But look at the networking capability of the box. My eyes popped when I saw that. It’s really advanced gear. Makes it hard to draw comparison. 010
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 01/06/2026Have you looked into Heat Recovery Ventilation systems? 100
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 27/05/2026Do they need to have tried and failed? To qualify, I mean… Does music education at school count? My literature teacher told me many times I will never write anything in my life. I guess the music teacher thought that too. 010
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 25/05/2026My and Cri looked at the pictures in the press release, we come from quite different angles when it comes to automotive design… (and we owned 3 generations of Prius over the years…). We looked at each other with the same big question mark face. 000
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 21/05/2026That sink is every AI vibe coded application, if you review the code. Hey, it passes all unit tests though… 120
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 20/05/2026Maybe I see this in rosy retrospection, but I feel that the work I did many years ago to create the Glimpse production renderer still feels to me the most insane project I ever started. 030
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 18/05/2026So, like you adjusted gradually? Or it just happened? 110
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 18/05/2026Hi there! I tried that, but technical books tend to keep my mind churning on work related stuff, sometimes they give me ideas, or my mind start spinning around how I disagree with the author and “this” is the way I would do it… I guess I should try to read about markets performance, or tax code 010
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 18/05/2026I always had some envy about people who can read books, novels before going to sleep. If I read something I find myself immersed in, goodby sleep, I won’t be able to sleep at all. 5491
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 14/05/2026I am not sure I understand. I suspect you are referring to the paragraph that summarizes like “with AI you ca do this and that and it’s all good”. Don’t take that literally as examples. It’s just there to say “you can find good use for it, but…”, and what that may be can change person to person. 000
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 14/05/2026Good on you. But if you are not using AI, If you haven’t tried hard enough to leverage the positive aspect and managing the shortcomings of the new tools, then likely you don’t understand the subtleties of what I am talking about. Mine is not a black and white take. 100
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 14/05/2026I all fits, until the big push becomes “pure agentic”, “dark factory” scenario, “specifications and tests are the new source code”, at which point I feel I’d enter a generational loss. 120
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 13/05/2026Thank you for your words. I think we are all trying to figure things out. The chance of atrophy is what worry me the most about this. That’s why I have been working on side projects, to not forget what I can do. But will that become irrelevant? 120
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 12/05/2026It's a thing. Now every time I sit at my project and start coding, or debugging, there is a part of my brain that screams, "why are you doing this, push the button! It'll be easy, why are writing this loop here?". 050
Max Liani @maxliani.bsky.social · 12/05/2026That’s right. I recall phong was sharper at grazing angles. 010
