🦇🌲🔬 Ultrasonic recorders to see if restoration in Washington's coastal rainforests influences bat communities It was a treat to wander between old growth forest stands, overstocked stands that were clear-cut and replanted, and thinned restored stands @nature.org @science.nature.org #batscience

🏘️ In my spare time I work in support of this local organization to protect & build homes for low-to-moderate income people Proud to write this article in our regional news journal Housing lands trusts won't solve the housing crunch alone, but they help lots www.thejoltnews.com/stories/a-la...

🐸💚🐸 It's World Frog Day and that gives me a chance to remember the critters that defined much of my career. Frogs are amphibians, a word that means "two lives" - one life in water and one on land - which means frogs are doubly impacted by environmental change Also they're just neat

🌲+ 🪚 = ❄️ - 🔥 (Cutting trees = more snow?) The math checks out New science from the Washington Cascades show that the same forest treatments we use to reduce wildfire risk also hold more snow in our mountains Fantastic science by TNC and University of Washington colleagues @science.nature.org

Salmon still surprise us, despite being some of the best studied animals 🐟 💙 Salmon have complex juvenile migrations and use diverse habitats outside their natal watershed before entering the sea. What we conserve matters for recovery! @science.nature.org cdnsciencepub.com/doi/full/10....

Land is everything Watching these changes where I grew up motivated me to become a conservation scientist But I also see so many people struggling to afford housing and energy This is why I study how conservationists can help rapidly build things we need while also protecting and restoring nature

Can supporting masculinity help solve climate change and heal society? Interesting lessons from this book & study. A new approach to masculinity and supporting boys/men may help heal society and the planet. Maybe a warmer version of masculinity can cool our planet and society #climate #masculinity

I'm proud to be a Board Member at Thurston Housing Land Trust! Housing is one of our most important issues. As a conservationist, I believe conserving nature and building much-needed housing can co-exist. I think we can be conservationists who build. And I'm grateful for the work ahead.

2025 in #Science. Publications aren't the most important thing in science but they can be a fun record of a year's portfolio of research. The below figures showcase the diversity of my research that came out this past year. All of this science relied on collaborations with 𝓭𝓸𝔃𝓮𝓷𝓼 of diverse partners

Fun to see our local, undergraduate-led study on salmon eggs and fry being eaten by introduced African Clawed Frogs in Washington highlighted in AmphibiaWeb. @amphibiaweb.org holds a special place in my heart for its reach to global conservation circles. 🐸 💚 🐟 amphibiaweb.org

I recently carved this 57lb bow from a piece of Pacific yew from the North Cascades and it's a joy to shoot

Salmon don't need any more problems, but African Clawed Frogs might be a new one. Our newly-published experiment shows that these frogs easily chow down on eggs, alevin, and fry from multiple salmon species cdnsciencepub.com/doi/10.1139/...

HOW we study biodiversity shapes WHAT we understand about biodiversity We show that trait variability (1) within individuals, (2) among individuals of the same species, and (3) between species changes what we understand about evolution to changing environments journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...

Emerging from four days pulling dozens of bird song recorders and wildlife cameras from our three coastal TNC forest preserves. I'm grateful to study biodiversity in one of the most beautiful landscapes on Earth. These data will help us understand how wildlife responds to forest restoration

Housing or trees? Science says "why not both?" 🌲 🏡 🏢 🌲 We need housing. We also needs trees. Our new study across western Washington finds gaining housing at the expense of trees is not inevitable. conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... #conservation #housing #biodiversity #winwin

💚🐢My research now touches everything from solar panels to salmon recovery, but one of my first and forever science loves are turtles. And today is a very happy World Turtle Day This beauty is one of the many stunning western pond turtles I've had the privilege of working with #WorldTurtleDay

Climate change? Land use? Both? "Nature isn't really our friend, is it?" Yesterday's Doonesbury captures a common sentiment and underscores how climate change is overemphasized when many natural challenges are due to land use decisions #Beavers #Conservation #Biodiversity #ClimateChange

🌲 🦌 🐻 🦅 🐦‍⬛ 🌲 Field Prep! Deploying dozens of acoustic recorders for birds and cameras for mammals (and a dash of AI) to study what biodiversity looks like in Pacific Northwest forests that are in various stages of transition out of industrial timber harvest #biodiversity #conservation

Always learning - I'm a slow reader with books because I tend to bounce around multiple at a time. I enjoy letting the ideas from different books have a conversation in my noggin, even if wasn't the authors' intention These are the books I've been working through recently

It's World Wildlife Day and I remain ever grateful for the amazing species I get to coexist with and play a small part in protecting. And I'm so appreciative of the many friends and colleagues who dedicate their lives to making sure our existence is enriched by bountiful wildlife. #WorldWildlifeDay

I know less about football than I do about raptors, so this superbOwl I'm all about those eagles I cut my teeth in conservation by working with raptors! Lots of lovely science on birds of prey at Peregrine Fund and Cornell peregrinefund.org/explore-rapt... www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/browse...

Fires like those in Los Angeles are a result of our housing practices. They're absolutely caused by climate change, but also land use habits. Scientists for decades have been highlighting this growing problem www.linkedin.com/posts/max-la...

Love that Olympia's city staff drive vehicles decorated in winter garb and lights across the different neighborhoods each year. Amazing way to celebrate city employees and the holiday season ❄️☃️🧑‍🎄🎄🚒🚔🚚

Love and feelings are not typically associated with science or scientists. But I deeply appreciated the past week gathering with @nature.org scientists from around the world where LOVE was a message echoed throughout many conversations 🧠 and 💚 help scientists tackle the most pressing problems on 🌏
