Right is a fluffy danty queen by the original artist Shou Xin. Left is my chonky guy recreation. He is displeased with the treat situation! #beginnerartist #beginnerart #coloredpencil
Minimalist sketch done in black colored pencil of a chunky kitty with a cranky or displeased facial expression. The original art i imitated as drawing practice. The style is identical only this cat looks more danty and fluffy than fat. And she also has a more neutral to pleasant expression on her face. She's fine with the treat situation.

Made this minimalist cat for a dear dear friend's birthday coming up! Inspired by and styled after artist Shou Xin's minimalist cat series. #tradart #traditionalart #beginnerartist #beginnerart #coloredpencil #sketch #catart
Black color pencil sketch of a black cat laying on it's left side with 4 leggies sticking out. The cat is looking up over it's shoulder so you can see his face.

Played around with a #watercolor pencil. Made a piece, once again, inspired by the minimalist cat drawings of Shou Xin who makes incredible art! Mine on the left theirs (have zero bio info) on the right! #beginnerartist #beginnerart #watercolorpencils #catart
Minimalist drawing of a black cat going zoom. The use of watercolor pencil allowed for me to use water to create motion blur. The original art piece by Shou Xin used as inspiration. The artist uses graphite pencil to create incredibly minimalist art of cats. It's best described as an incredibly controlled and precise scribble sketch.

Painted a #sunset with #watercolor and a touch of a golden #oilpastel with a job paint couldn't achieve. I was mostly playing with my first sample a friend sent me of cotton coldpress, which i love, and some different brushes and techniques. Still, for being experimental i love this piece! #abstract
Abstract watercolor painting of a very colorful sunset. Different shades of purple near the top into blues, which are the sky, then a line of yellow for the golden sun filling the horizon. A little golden yellow oil pastel is used hete in the center to represent the sun itself with a bold brightness i can't yet pull off with watercolors. Then below the yellow is orange. There is a spot or orange top near the left corner in with the purples. And where the yellow and blue meet color theory proves true i made green. Opps. But it kinda works. There are clear lines but they are blurred best i could, not well defined nor straight. These lines are very gay.

This is from a little book of watercolor postcards my friend sent me. The line art was already in place I added color. For this piece I was focusing on experimenting with different brushes and brush/water control. It's a process and I'm a beginner. #beginnerartist #beginnerart #watercolor
Swirls and dot line art on a white postcard colored in with watercolors using all different shades of green, blue, purple, pink, yellow, and orange. It has a very Crayola factory exploded use of color going on. There are areas i left white to make the colors pop.

My recreation of more of Shou Xin's minimalist cat art. I am teaching myself art in my 40's and am a true beginner so please be kind. #beginnerartist #beginnerart #oilpastels #traditionalart #tradart #CatArt
My recreation of the minimalist cat art shown and described in the second photo, which was my reference. This piece is similar enough you can tell where my inspiration came from, while being far from identical. My piece also differs in that i used a black oil pastel instead of a pencil. A piece of art by Shou Xin that is a minimalist pencil drawing of a cat. The cat looks like it's just landed on the ground, front paws only have touched down, from jumping down from a high place.

Finally, my good friend Chubby David is winterized. Alt text is worth reading.
Michelangelo's David in mini form garden statue. Only, he's put on quite a few pounds, which makes him better if you ask me. Uh. He is family appropriate because he was designed with a leaf over his privates which the original David proudly has on display. My Chubby David is winterized with a crochet rainbow winter hat and matching scarf wrapped around his neck. These were custom made to his size by my good friend Jen, who isn't on bluesky so I can't tag her. This image is a full length of Chubby David. This image of Chubby David is a close up mid torso up to show off his winter wear. The scarf almost completely obscures his face, with his eyes peeking out over it.

Then made sure my spinny thing was in one piece and hung proper (it hates the wind) but the wind is essential to its concept.
Wire frame work that can be a flat spiral circle or stretched into a sphere or something approaching a sphere. In the center are two light blue translucent plastic crystals that cast light when the sun hits it just right. This is hung outside my one cat's window which the blinds are pulled up enough it casts dancing light through the window into my room.

Spent some time outside working on my whimsy. First up was filling bird feeders. Plus the little tray to appease the squirrels. Squirrels count as cat tv so I've made my peace with them.
5 bird feeders, different styles with little repetition hang from a 5 hook Shepard's hook. All 5 feeders are completely full of black oil sunflower seeds. There is also a little wire tray PILED with the same seeds for easy squirrel access.

With today's tulips, my first (ever) 12 watercolor paintings are done, my workbook completed. Teaching myself art in my 40's is so far a fulfilling experience! #beginnerartist #beginnerart #flowers #watercolor #tradart #traditionalart
A watercolor painting of yellow tulips in a mason jar. A couple shades of yellow, one brighter and one darker were used on the blooms. The greenery uses a mix of green, brown and yellow, as the base color, with a couple drops of black added to the mix to then go back over with highlights. A very very light shade of grey with tinges of green was used to make the mason jar look like clear glass and a very washed out shade of brown was used for the water. This time i remembered the shadow. It's the same basic shade as the slightly green shade of grey for the glass.

Watercolor of a yellow buttercup. Shades of yellow brown detailing highlight the base of the flower and overlap where the petals meet, plus the pollen. The stem is a dark greem. Off the stem is another flower bud not yet open.

Here, please take this offering of cherry blossoms. I'm teaching myself art in my 40s and this is like my, I dunno, maybe 8th painting ever. It's out of a workbook so the lines aren't mine. The color mixing sure is tho! #beginnerartist #beginnerart #flowers #watercolor
Watercolor painting of delicate pink cherry blossoms. They are sticking out of a teal glass bottle of water. The leaves use a couple different shades of green to add interest. The stems are brown since cherry blossoms of course come from trees, so this is in fact a small very thin branch in the bottle.

Ash here had a cardiology workup at the vet (and earned a new diagnosis). He spent a few hours with them and they put him in a chicken hat and showed him off to everyone. He's a chill cat so he radically accepted it. He's been esa to a 14yo for 4.5 years. Unflappable.
Little grey cat with a wonky left ear wearing a chicken hat. He's slightly drugged because vet procedure but otherwise content to be held by vet staff and to tour the building and visit. He was inpatient there for 3 days a few weeks ago so he loves them and they love him.

Not my favorite that I've done, but I am absolutely still learning. This is out of a watercolor workbook that provides lines and suggestions on what colors could be used and what it might look like. I chose to go brighter. No regrets! #beginnerartist #beginnerart #flowers #watercolor
Watercolor painting of a bunch of white daisies with greenery, in a purple pitcher. The daisies are unpainted except for yellow pollen centers. The greenery uses a mix of different tints of green pulling in some yellow tones and some teal tones, all mixed with kelly green. There are about half a dozen different green tints used in the greenery. The pitcher is standard unaltered purple, except that some line work has black mixed into the purple so it's darker.

Shou Xin (www.instagram.com/shouxin13141/) makes some amazing minimalist cat art, which has inspired me, a brand new beginner artist to try and mimic as art practice. I'm showing the originals here, in replies I'll show what I've created.
A very minimalist controlled I'm not calling them scribbles but they are that but controlled and professional art of a cat standing and stretching it's back legs, tail arched up over its body.More highly controlled not scribbles minimalist art of a cat standing up back arched the cat looks scared or forlorn. There are face details but again the artist's intent was minimalist pencil drawings and it is well executed.

Blue sky, Blue Hills #bluehills #wisconsin
Scenery photograph of the Blue Hills in Northern Wisconsin. This image shows fields of green with a scattering of trees indicative of Wisconsin being in the Northern Woods. Half the photo is sky which is a beautiful shade of what we've named sky blue, and the sky is full of white cotton ball clouds.More fields with a thick tree line in the distance and approaching on the left, the direction the car is heades. There are pretty tall, yellow wildflowers along side the road. Again the sky is an amazing blue with white clouds. The field in the photo is full of crops that i believe to be soy beans as a lot of corn and soy is grown in this area. The two crops alternate in the fields, one year corn the next year soy. The field is green and yellow as the soy crops dry up and lose their moisture, an essential preharvest step. It turns the fields a beautiful shade of golden yellow. The field goes all the way back to where it meets a thick line of trees separating the field from the blue cloud filled sky.

How about more learning to art in my 40's pieces? This is #JaskierTheCat. I've been working with oil pastels not long at all, so this piece turning out is luck! #beginnerartist #beginnerart #oilpastels #CatsOfBluesky #CatArt
White and Grey oil pastel work on a black thick piece of oil pastel paper. Jaskier, the cat depicted, is a white and grey cat. This piece is focused on his head and is thus mostly white, but he has a grey patch up top and around back of his head almost like he has a head of blackish grey hair like a human might. There is a little touch of black for his eye included, as well as his little pink nose. The art does honestly look like the intended cat. It's fairly good beginner art.The reference photo for the cat art. The difference here is that you can see in the reference photo he's loafed on me in my bed, whereas I'm not in the art piece.

I lied. This is the big beauty in the middle of the theater proper. Not sure where I found the first one in the original post, but I could see it sat in the center far back of the balcony as that's where I took the photo.
Wrought Iron chandelier absolutely dripping with crystals. It's placed centrally inside the main theater chamber.

I have always LOVED the #chandeliers in #OldTheaters. These are found at the #PalaceTheater in #ColumbusOhio
Central chandelier in the middle of the theater proper. It looks made of wrought iron and crystal. It has been upgraded to electric. This much smaller chandelier, there is a series of them, lights up the balcony. It's also wrought iron and crystal and has been upgraded to electric. This chandelier is outside of the theater proper, it's over the entrance lobby leading towards the hall leading to theater entrances, bathrooms, and concessions. Again it's wrought iron, crystal, and electric upgraded like the others. Of the 4 chandeliers photographed, this one is by far the grandest and most extravagant. It drops hundreds if not thousands of crystals. This is a directly underneath looking up view of one of the smaller chandeliers. It shows the wrought iron detailing has a leaf (maybe fern) motif. And of course more crystals. This one is in the concessions/bathrooms hall leading to the staircases that go up to the balcony.

This is Ash. He is this week's 2500$ vet bill with potentially more to come. Ash likes baskets. This basket holds my art supplies. He's just sleeping here and I used this opportunity to work on making cat shapes. #beginnerartist #beginnerart #CatsOfBluesky #oilpastels
This is the reference first. A grey cat sleeping in a grey woven cloth basket. Piece of cardboard is sticking out of the side closest to the camera. Over the top of it you can see just the top of his stupid little head and his body curled up rising behind it. The basket is on a table tucked under a plant. The background is general livingroom with a sofa and some bookcases. The art is a minimalist recreation of the basket including the cardboard, and his stupid little head peeking up out of the basket, with his curled up little body. There is no background. Bottom right corner it reads Max 2025.

Ok now maybe some beginner art. I First an oil pastel. My oil pastel work is an attempt at learning how to make base shapes happen. I'm not looking for details, just, "Yep, that's a cat!" This is Soot and attempt #5 or 6 at teaching myself art in my 40's. #beginnerartist #beginnerart #oilpastels
Colored in outline of a black cat laying down on the floor. Pencil was used to make a minimalist recreation of the blackes and piles on the floor. Soot 8s nestled in the pile and instead of pencil black oil pastels were used to recreate her shape, and then i colored her in with black because she's a black cat. Doen in the bottom right corner it reads Max 2024.This is the reference photo of Soot in the floor nest surrounded by blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals. Probably one of my favorite photos from the drive through the Blue Hills of Northern Wisconsin a few weeks ago. I visited my 22yo who moved to the general area a few years ago and he showed me the scenery. #bluehills #wisconsin
View of the road ahead, bending to the left. A view of the tree covered hills is straight ahead, not too far back from the bend in the road. Trees line the road on either side. Meet my 4 household kitties! Black - Soot Sprite Spooky Pants Grey - Ash Those two share the job of ESA to my struggling 14yo Calico - Angel - My 26yo's ESA Grey and White - Jaskier - My 17yo's ESA #caturday
Photo of a black cat we call Soot. She looks uneasy like she's not a fan of this photo being taken. She's lying down in the photo kind of hunched and is coming into frame on a diagonal. She looks ready to bolt by her body language. Ash, a grey cat, is sitting handsome on my kitchen floor aware he's being paid in treats to pose. He looks alert and at ease. He's looking just to the left of me instead of at the camera. 3 guesses where the promised treats are. It's very important you know his left ear is crinkled. It makes him extra handsome.Close up of the calico, Angel. Her face is about 60% black, 30% brown, and 10% white. As she is a calico, these colors are in patches. She looks a little confused that's just her norm.Jaskier looks mostly white in this photo due to it being a close-up of his shoulders, front legs, and head. What grey there is makes it look like he has a receded hairline of grey hair. If you mess with his fur you can give him an effective comb over. He's looking down in the photo because he's snoozing, blissfully unaware of having his photo taken. He's also used to it.

So this #watercolor workbook I'm working my way through (this is painting 7) provides line art that I then fill in with color. The book also offers a reference for how each image might look, but it's only a suggestion. Some I take, some I leave. #beginnerartist #flowers #beginnerart
Bouquet of watercolor flowers. I don't know flower types so I'm no help there but it's got about 6 different flower types you might find as wildflowers and put in a vase. The flowers are in an array of colors and each color uses a couple of different hues and saturations. There is a large yellow and yellowish brown flower front and center. To the left is a small navy flower with different degrees of saturation so it's lighter and darker. Up from there are different yellow flowers we'll see again on the right side of the bouquet. Up from there across the top is some greenery (also scattered through the middle of the bouquet), a white flower with blue edges, a different flower that has the same fluffy quality as a peony, and then another of the white flowers with blue edges. Going down the right side are more of those yellow flowers i promised would return, as well as a purple something. All these flowers have green stems that come together and are tied up in a bow with some teal ribbon. Going back to color use and saturation, none of the flowers nor greenery is flat color. Each is a complex mix of colors playing with, for example, different shades of green for the greenery. There are probably a dozen different shades of green used, all of them a slightly different shade as I add in a yellow here or a brown there, and now more green, the puddle of green paint I was working with was ever evolving. A similar process was used for each color and each flower. Though green is an outlier in the number of shades used. I also used different amounts of water to increase and decrease how saturated the colors are. Sometimes a flower might be just one shade of purple but the amount of water changes within the flower itself so some parts are darker and some are lighter. This is the unaltered page of the workbook showing the provided line work that I worked within for the piece described in the previous photo. It's all of the line work with none of the color. You can also see that this workbook is spiral bound.

This is the second #watercolor I've made outside of school as a kid. I'm teaching myself art in my 40s with oil pastels and watercolors, though not yet on the same page. I chose to put this #peony in blue glass because it's superior glass. This is in a workbook that provides lines. #beginnerartist
Watercolor of a single pink peony in a blue glass bottle. What's it called when it's the same shade of pink (as an example) but there are lighter and darker bits? I did that with the bloom. The stem is an almost olive green and the leaves are a brighter green also playing with i guess different degrees of opaqueness. The blue bottle utlizes this practice too. It's all the same shade of blue but the edges are darker and the center more opaque because that's accurate to blue glass. This whole piece was dedicated to adding different amounts of water to a color to get different results and practice how that looks.

This is the first ever #watercolor I've made as an adult teaching myself how to make art in my 40s. No artist experience prior, other than the oil pastels I've also been working with started at the same time. This is in a watercolor workbook. #beginnerartist #flower #hydrangea
Watercolor of a blue hydrangea. It'sa workbook so the lines were there for me already, i added color. There is one bloom in various shades of blue including some with purple hues. They range from a pastel blue up towards a navy. The stem is a darker almost olive green and the leaves are a blend of the same almost olive green and a brighter but opaque almost kelly green. "Almost" because they aren't quite matching those shades of green, but they are close enough to help get it across. Down at the corner written in pen it reads "Max 2025".

The other type of art I'm teaching myself in my 40s (besides embroidery and oil pastels) is watercolors. I have zero history as an artist before this I'm very new, but I have a watercolor workbook and made this today. Be nice? This is maybe my 5th in this book. #beginnerartist #watercolor #flowers
Watercolor painting of a pot of pansies in a workbook. The pot is large and brown with an attempt at the light coming in from the right making the right side of the pot a lighter more yellowed brown and the left side a slightly darker but still slightly yellowed shade of brown. There is a tiny patch of green at the lower left corner of the pot. Not the pot itself but just outside it. Based on the lighting it could be shadow but the workbook suggested green and it looks like a patch of grass and I haven't worked my way up to shadows so it readily looks like grass. Inside the pot are 3 pansies. These pansies are blue and utilize a mixture of shades of blue from almost navy to a not-quite-pastel blue. Along with the flowers are the leaves and stems you'd expect to go with. Multiple shades of green were used here just different amounts of yellow and/or black added to the base kelly green (there is no actual kelly green used unaltered).

This is my third ever piece of art teaching myself in my 40's. This was 100% a study of making deliberate shapes happen. The only medium used was oil pastels no pencil. No erasing. No details. Could I make the general shape happen? Yep! #beginnerart #oilpastels #linework #beginnerartist
Photograph of a piece of oil pastels friendly paper with a drawing of just the head of a black cat on it. There are no details for the face. It's just an attempt at the general shape of a cat's head, including the ears, then filled in with black. Bottom right reads Max 2025. Reference photo of the black cat in question. She's lying on the floor with her front paws visible, looking up at the camera. She's partially under a rocking chair whose frame is made of grey wood. You can't see much of the chair, just a small beam of wood that makes up part of the seat, over her head. The carpet she is on is beige.

Did you know wild sweet violets can be white? They can! My yard grows tons of them! #bloomposting #sweetwildviolets #whiteflower #springflowers #photography #hiddenpurpledetails
Closeup of a sweet wild violet that is white instead of purple. This photo is face on looking at the bloom at grass level and up close. Which means we can see inside the bloom. Which means we can see the white sweet violets have purple veins the same color as the purple blooms! So it's not totally white, it does have purple details, and this photo shows them. The background is green grass of the lawn. No other flowers happen to be in view. This is the same flower from the same grass level angle but photographed from behindm. You can see the green stem and white petals, but you cannot see the hidden purple inside the flower from this direction. The background is green grass of the lawn with a blurry patch of traditional purple wild sweet violets up in the top left corner.

These are, have been, and always will be my favorite flowers. When I married my ex-wife I planned our #spring wedding around when I knew the spring #WildSweetViolets bloom, so I could weave them in my hair. About 6.5 months until they return! #wildflowers #bloomposting #springflowers #purple
Pulled back view of a section of the expanse of my yard. The photo shows nothing but lawn. An expanse of bright green spring grass peppered with thousands of purple wild sweet violets. There are also maybe a dozen yellow dandelions sprinkled through. The lawn is maybe 30-40% purple. Very purple. Close up of a clump of purple sweet violets in a sea of green grass.Another close up of the violets in the grass. Different clump, different composition. All scattered through the grass. This is a full zoom in on a small clump of violets in the grass.

#artInstallation in the lobby of Mount Carmel East in #Columbus #Ohio
Full view of the art installation. Four wavy panels bolted to the wall rising up. As they near the ceiling birds in flight cutout holes are in the panels until we reach the top where metal birds are taking flight up the wall and then across the ceiling. There are roughly 3 dozen birds flying out of the installation across the lobby ceiling. The wall the installation starts on and the ceiling are wood panels. The lobby is well lit with floor-to-ceiling windows bathing the lobby and especially the metal birds in light. Beyond the art, the lobby shows other things you'd find in a hospital lobby like wheelchairs, plants, and signage. You can see the entrance to the hospital just barely in frame on the left. This image shows the birds suspended from the ceiling from below looking up. It also catches not the wavy metal panels but where the birds are taking off from them. There are roughly 2 dozen birds suspended from the ceiling and another dozen or so that are taking flight out of the panels but that haven't reached the ceiling. This is a close-up of the wall portion of the art. The four wavy metal panels are lined up beside each other alternating rises and falls in the waves between them. They are all 4 different lengths some rising closer to the ceiling than others. Each panel, towards the top, before the birds start taking flight has 4-6 bird-shaped cutouts from the metal, from the perspective of looking down or up at birds in flight. This photo also captures some of the birds coming up out of the panels and the very start of them flying across the ceiling. This is a photo of the plaque for the art, bolted to the wall beside it. It explains the art is in memory of "friend and leader Michael D. Wilkins" who 2as hospital president from 2016-2019. It shares the art was made by Zachary Oxman born 1968. It's part of his soaring pathways series attributed to 2018. It shares the metal used is aluminum. It was dedicated October 29, 2019. The plaque reads, "Mike will be remembered for his smile, his kindness, and his relentless drive to always do better for our patience and our community. His words say it best (quote within a quote), 'We are all here answeting our calling. Our patients rely on us to be strong - to be a piece of comfort, care, hope and strength. They deserve the best from us.'" (End both quotes.) There is also a piece down with the artist info that reads, "The dove represents the presence of the holy spirit. Let it remind us that on our path we are never alone."
