Multilateralism should be judged not only by the agreements governments reach, but by what those agreements make possible. It must connect the actors, creating the conditions to turn collective ambition into action. @fao.org's Hand-in-Hand Initiative is an example of this practice.

As shipping is rerouted around Africa, there’s an opportunity that could outlast the current conflict in Middle East: invest in infrastructure to connect areas of high agricultural potential to markets. Ports, roads, rail, storage, and logistics can boost Africa’s food security.

Global food security outlook is worsening, as pressures mount across agrifood systems: energy, fertilizer, freight, extreme weather, disrupted trade routes. The priority is to maintain market transparency, keep trade open, act early, and coordinate. maximotorero.wordpress.com/wp-content/u...

Markets price not only today’s supply but expectations of what will be available tomorrow. Supply buffers are stronger than in 2022, and a food crisis is not inevitable. But the August price increases are a signal that multiple risks could converge into a broader supply shock.

Asia has made more progress in reducing hunger than any other region since 2015. But as a net energy importer, it could be hit hardest by a prolonged Strait of Hormuz crisis, with 10 million additional people falling into hunger by 2030. Hard-won progress can be quickly undone.

The quinoa boom boosted farmers' incomes but also made quinoa unaffordable for many poorer households who relied on it as a staple. With 1/3 of global population priced out of healthy diets, reducing their cost requires both supply- and demand-side action, sequenced correctly.

75% of what consumers pay for food is added after it leaves the farm. So why do governments continue to focus only on what happens on the farm? Shifting focus from production to value chains will reduce losses, strengthen markets, and lower the cost of healthy diets. #SOFI2026

The Gulf is not only an energy hub. It's also a major remittance hub. Remittances to low- and middle-income countries reached $685 billion in 2024, supporting nearly one billion people. Prolonged instability in the Gulf could weaken these flows, with consequences for food security and livelihoods.

Urea prices, up 56% immediately after the Strait of Hormuz blockade began, have returned near pre-conflict levels. But the price decline may be a warning sign as farmers cut fertilizer use. Combined with a likely El Niño, this could reduce yields and push up food prices in 2027.
