On April 26, 1872, Giorgio Sommer took this photograph of Mount Vesuvius during its largest eruption of the nineteenth century--the very first known photograph of a volcanic eruption. Look for it in my forthcoming book, ASHES: A HISTORY OF THOUGHT AND SUBSTANCE, due out next year from Punctum Books.

Grim, excellent article by François Furstenberg on why everyone should fight the corporatization of US higher-ed. Colleges and universities have been on this anti-democratic, anti-intellectual path for decades, and it will keep getting worse--unless students, their parents, and donors take action.
