Verin and Loial would awkwardly leave, but they'd make sure to deliver your favorite pastry and book, respectively, the next day

"Blue blue" but in the style of that Majority Report needle drop of "crime crime" from Olivia Rheingold's cringe attempt at parodying John Oliver

Or, in states where juries must be "death-qualified" (jurors can be struck if they don't believe in the death penalty), you get deeply biased juries for the fact/guilt phase.

I frankly haven't bothered to dig deep and try to understand bc I just didn't buy the very first step - "I realized I'm an ontological realist about math and therefore logical consistency requires that I become a devout Catholic" is nonsense, I'm sorry

Leah was my roommate in college and I'm more and more appalled at her transformation every time I hear about her. She's so smart and yet so lost.

Dhoom Machale - I had to look it up, I don't know Bollywood as well as I should. And that's why I loved it - he refused to be constrained by the assumption that a political spectacle needs to appeal to the limited cultural competencies of default whiteness as a lowest common denominator.

What a fantastic choice of exit music, too. A choice as unapologetic and proudly uncompromising in its joyful conviction as everything he said out loud.

"LET TONIGHT BE THE FINAL TIME I UTTER HIS NAME" exactly the kind of burn that smug Islamophobic sex pest deserves - and more, it was almost an incantation

That's so Nynaeve though - she needs to be the caretaker for her friends, she will never abandon them no matter how good the reasons, and to hell with anyone who calls her hypocritical for it!

I think you meant saidar (and the fact that it's easy to get them mixed up means the show did the right thing not to rely on those words too much) - but yeah!! Look out for Scout Storey's forthcoming book on trans readings of WoT!

Look out for another batch of videos on Lezbi Nerdy's YouTube channel about the soundtrack motifs. Might be a while until we record, but I've analyzed S3 now and we're going to talk a lot about all the ways the Aiel music is developed!

Kinda sounds like Machado might be the Chalabi of Venezuela. We CANNOT be repeating Iraq in Venezuela.

"Robot" is the Czech word for "slave." It was coined by Karel Capek in his 1920 play about mechanical slaves. Humans have been trying to sound the alarm about this idea since the beginning!

I appreciate your points and agree! I think I had the pundit class in mind in particular. It's just interesting to me that THIS is everyone's five alarm fire. Kinda shows where the sympathies and priorities are. But yeah, people finally coming to the realization things have crossed lines? Great!

Relatedly - it feels like the outage regarding a cancelled comedy show is dwarfing the outrage over Mahmoud Khalil's detention months ago, and ironically it's also drowning out news from yesterday about a new deportation order against him.

I keep thinking how it wouldn't be so easy to weaponize the phrase "terrorist sympathizer" against folks refusing to glowingly memorialize CK, if centrists hadn't stood by (or worse, joined in) every time it was weaponized against people speaking out in support of Palestinian liberation.

The chaos of civil war and statelessness is horrific, but so is fascism, and by the time it's locked in, it will be too late to negotiate it away without violence. 5/5

What's my point? Idk, I guess I just hope that we're careful not to lend a default sheen of legitimacy to political violence currently being enacted by the state by contrasting it with violence by non-state actors. 4/x

To say nothing of the genocide and ethnic cleansing being aided and abetted by an "ally" in occupied Palestine, as well as the genocides being effectively ignored (which is itself a violation of international law) in Sudan and Congo. 3/x

Note how Ezra Klein's list of political violence incidents didn't include the folks who have died while held by ICE with no due process, the utterly illegal execution of Venezuelans, the illegal deployment of the National Guard, the preventable deaths resulting from healthcare policy... 2/x

While rising political violence is not good, I think it's also important to recognize the extent to which ALL politics is a negotiation over exactly what violence is legitimate (in the sense of the definition of a state as the monopoly on legitimate violence). 1/x

When you say regressive, are you talking about the weird gender stuff? I think there's a way to read some of that against the grain, but yeah, pretty sure that's a flaw of the author's perspective - especially if he actually believes what he's said about the Uyghurs...

Do I know anyone on here who'd be interested in seeing Georg Friedrich Haas's "11,000 Strings" on Oct 4 (2pm and/or 8pm) in NYC with me? I got tickets for myself, my parents, and a friend, but the friend isn't able to attend.

Vysehrad? Are y'all doing another scavenger hunt there, or just exploring? PS - highly recommend listening to Smetana's Vysehrad at the Vysehrad and Vltava while cruising or walking along the Vltava. And/or, listen to some Dvorak at his grave in the Vysehrad cemetery!

I'm very curious what you mean, I love seeing how the show's changes (which I'm generally very positive about) affect people's theories as they read for the first time - would you mind telling me in rot13 for spoiler avoidance?

I'd say the Tencent adaptation was a lesson in "be careful what you wish for" with strict adaptations. Hardcore 3BP fans might enjoy it, but it would absolutely bore the tears out of a general audience who isn't already invested. Sometimes brevity is a virtue. That said, still worth watching!

Tencent was beat for beat and then some. I do think it improved on the characters though - Wang Miao / Da Shi felt like a real bromance, there was some interesting off page stuff filled in with ETO, etc. Plus some, like, music videos thrown in for vibes? And lots of repeat scenes across episodes.

Agreed. And if throwing in the Pattern's manipulations alongside the individuals' own agency doesn't learn the achievements of the boys, it shouldn't lessen Egwene's achievements either if she's ta'veren.

Hmm, I'm so curious what you're thinking, and what bits of the book you're piecing together to come to your theory. (Also ignore my question on the other post, clearly you've watched the show - and now that I say that I feel like I can maybe remember having watched your reaction videos?)

The droplet is such an incredible moment! Like, even beyond the cinematic aspect, the sheer emotional impact of what it means is just ... Oof. Praying that Tencent and/or Netflix do it justice. Have you checked the shows out? Are you gonna have a video or livestream when you finish this book?

If you're short on time, I also recommend making sure to watch her answer to the question on screen at about 8:00 minutes - what she says about her reaction to filming a torture scene is really powerful and heartbreaking.

Remember what Ishamael did to Moiraine in 108, which we learned about when it was undone in 207? It was a shield that had been "tied off" - so it remains even while not being actively channeled into. It's very quick, but Moiraine in the finale implies that she figured out how to do it herself.

Which is to say: I agree with your general sentiment but it's worth emphasizing that people are quite right to evaluate whether to put limited time and money into media on the basis of headlines and secondhand accounts and perceptions of bias - so don't talk down to folks who've decided to divest.

A big part of convincing me to spend money on a NYT sub is getting me to feel like I'm not giving money to a propaganda weapon against leftists, Muslims, and trans people. You advertise that you have good reporting via your headlines. I'm not gonna pay for what seems like it's betraying my values.

Severance is a masterpiece. Both seasons have blown me away in their own ways. 207, "Chikhai Bardo," is the only single episode of a show in recent memory that gives "Road to the Spear" a run for its money.

FAM is fantastic. It starts almost like a NASA documentary and then as the alt history gets more and more "alt," it starts to feel like an Expanse prequel. But the character are always the heart of the show, and I'm continually surprised at how emotionally affecting their stories are.

The Black Tower? But that also sort of proves your point, because it's not men breaking gender norms that also exist in the real world.
