Equestrian Portrait of Pieter de Roovere (1602-1652) www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
Pieter de Roovere, Lord of Hardinxveld, is sitting high on his horse, pointing with his whip to the salmon the fisherman is showing him. In the background, his men are salmon fishing – the main source of income in the village of Hardinxveld. The sky is dark, but there is still a strip of golden sunlight to be seen on the horizon. Cuyp, who worked in the neighbouring town of Dordrecht, chose a remarkably low vantage point here, making De Roovere tower above us and emphasising his impressive appearance.

Portrait of a Lady www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
At the beginning of the seventeenth century, Moreelse was one of the most important portraitists in Utrecht. Although we do not know the identity of the lady in this portrait, she must have been well-to-do. She is wearing a shiny black dress with gold thread, big gold chains and a stand-up collar of white lace, which Moreelse has painted with great refinement. In her hand she holds a fan of exotic ostrich feathers.

The Huntsman www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
A huntsman in a fine red jacket is sitting at an open window. He is raising his glass and giving us a roguish look. In front of him are the attributes of his work: a hunting horn and a dead pigeon. For Dutch-speaking contemporaries, the puns would have been immediately clear. The words ‘jagen’ (to hunt) and ‘vogelen’ (to catch birds) also referred to courting and making love. Metsu was born in Leiden, where he learned to paint very finely and precisely, like the Leiden ‘fijnschilder’, or fine painter, Gerrit Dou. The shiny jug on the windowsill shows these skills clearly.

Virgin and Child www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, numerous pictures were made of the Virgin and her child Jesus. This Madonna is by the German artist Lucas Cranach. He painted her with a beautiful, round idealised face and long wavy hair. She is looking ahead rather submissively, while her child tries to pluck a grape – a remarkably playful gesture. Two cherubs are holding up a cloth by way of a baldachin.

View of Sailing Boats on a Lake www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
Salomon van Ruysdael’s favourite subject was the Dutch water landscape with rivers, ponds and lakes. He painted it many times, often following an established pattern. He placed the horizon low and the clouds above in a diagonal line, thus creating a great sense of space and depth on a small scale. He also left the reddish-brown base visible here and there, which lends a quality of movement to the clouds. Salomon van Ruysdael was the uncle of Jacob van Ruisdael, who became even more famous as a landscape painter.

Achilles Discovered among the Daughters of Lycomedes www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
This painting by De Lairesse is a typical example of the style that came into fashion in Holland at the end of the seventeenth century. The light colours, smooth brushwork and even lighting are characteristic of this classical style. The subject is a story from classical antiquity. The Greek hero Achilles is dressed as a woman, in the hope that he can avoid being sent into battle. The painting depicts the moment when he picks up a sword on impulse and betrays himself.

Portrait of Elisabeth Troost (1730-1790) www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
Elisabeth Troost was the daughter of the painter Cornelis Troost. At the age of 28, she married Cornelis Ploos van Amstel, with whom she had been acquainted for years, as he was a collector of her father’s work. The bride and groom had their portraits painted by Van der Mijn, who portrayed Elisabeth in a household setting at the tea table. The Chinese porcelain, satin fabrics and ermine emphasise her refined taste and high position in the Amsterdam bourgeoisie.

Ships in the Roads www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
Willem van de Velde followed in his father’s footsteps and specialised in ship painting. Here, he gives an impression of a day on the water in almost dead calm. On the right, the crew of a three-master are hoisting the headsail, while a passenger is being rowed ashore. The activities are being watched from the yacht in the foreground right. The stern of the ship is richly decorated and bears a red Dutch lion and the Amsterdam coat of arms.

An Old Woman Bleeding a Young Woman, known as 'The Bloodletting' www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
Brekelenkam specialised in the subject of ordinary people going about their daily business. Here, he painted an elderly woman bleeding a younger woman. She is using heated pottery cups, which is why she is called a ‘cupper’. Bleeding was supposed to help prevent miscarriages – so the young woman may be pregnant.

Self-Portrait www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
No seventeenth-century artist made as many self-portraits as Rembrandt did. This self-portrait dates from 1669, the year Rembrandt died, so it may be the last he painted. The expressive freedom of style shows that Rembrandt was certainly not exhausted at the end of his life. The way he painted the face with strong brushstrokes is remarkable. With thick layers of paint that are almost modelled, Rembrandt suggests a man of flesh and blood. This is a true masterpiece.

Allegory of Peace www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
The lady sitting here on her throne represents Peace. A suit of armour lies unused at her feet, and she is holding a palm branch, while a white dove of peace is fluttering up into the air. Mattheus Terwesten is a lesser-known painter, who made many of this type of decorative scene. They were often part of an interior and, like this painting, were incorporated into the panelling.

Kitchen Scene with Christ at Emmaus www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
Beuckelaer painted a kitchen with numerous ingredients for a lavish meal: vegetables, fruits, nuts, poultry and a large cut of meat. The table linen and crockery are also displayed. In the background, Beuckelaer added the biblical story of Christ at Emmaus. He pushed this story into the background and took the secondary matter of the dinner preparations as the painting’s main subject. Such kitchen scenes are regarded as the forerunners of the still-lifes of the 17th century, in which the narrative elements have vanished entirely.

Sine Cerere et Baccho friget Venus (Without Ceres and Bacchus Venus Would Freeze) www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
"Sine Cerere et Baccho friget Venus" by Peter Paul Rubens explores the mythological connection and necessity of the deities Ceres and Bacchus in matters of love and fertility, exemplified by an intimate gathering of figures surrounded by elements of abundance. Rubens' Baroque style is evident in the dynamic composition and the richness of color and texture, highlighting the importance of sustenance and revelry in nurturing love.

Portrait of Peeter Stevens (c.1590-1668) www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
In 1627, the Antwerp cloth merchant Peeter Stevens had his portrait painted by Anthony van Dyck. When Stevens got married a year later, he commissioned Van Dyck to paint his wife Anna as well. Anna was placed on the left, so that Stevens did not have his back turned to her. But actually convention dictated that the man should hang on the left and the woman on the right. After Rubens, Van Dyck was the most important portraitist of his day. He was popular because he made his patrons look just a bit more beautiful and elegant than they really were.

Dead Cock Hanging from a Nail www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
This rooster hanging head down from a nail, with all its feathers ruffled, looks just like the real thing, as does the grain of the wooden wall behind it. If there was no frame around it, you could almost believe this rooster was real. That is why this type of picture is called a <i>trompe-l’oeil</i>, or trick of the eye. The painting is signed by Melchior d’Hondecoeter, the most celebrated bird painter of the seventeenth century. But it is not certain whether he actually painted it himself.

Italian Landscape with a Young Shepherd Playing with his Dog www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…

Dead Partridge Hanging from a Nail www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
A dead partridge is hanging from a nail by a string tied round its feet. It hangs against a white plastered wall in bright sunlight. The work has been painted to look almost like the real thing, in spite of the sparing use of colours. This type of deceptive painting, or trompe-l’oeil, was very popular in the mid-seventeenth century. This example is by Weenix, who is known mainly for his impressive Italian landscapes.

The Life of Man www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
The curtain is lifted to give us a clear view of an inn, where young and old are enjoying eating, drinking, playing and flirting. But for Jan Steen, it was not just about cheerful conviviality. His message is concealed in a small detail by the window. Up in the dark attic, a boy is blowing bubbles next to a skull. Although life is wonderful, eventually it will burst like a bubble.

Portrait of Michiel de Ruyter (1607-1676) www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
Michiel de Ruyter, Admiral of the Dutch Fleet, won a glorious battle against the English in the Four Days’ Battle of 1666. To commemorate this victory, he had his portrait painted by the Amsterdam portraitist Bol. In the background is a seascape with De Ruyter’s flagship. The portrait is still in its original seventeenth-century frame. It is a gilded trophy frame boasting a wonderful collection of weaponry: drums, flags, cannons and powder kegs. De Ruyter’s coat of arms is displayed in the top centre.

A Useless Moral Lesson www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
The meaning of this scene by the ‘fijnschilder’, or fine painter, Schalcken would have been immediately clear to seventeenth-century viewers. It concerns the lesson being given to the young, fashionable woman, while she almost lets the little bird escape from its cage. The bird is symbolic of her virginity. The old woman standing beside her is raising her finger in warning and cautioning her against the dangers of love. But her lesson is useless – the young virgin is hardly listening.

Interior with a Woman Washing her Hands www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
A lady is washing her hands with water from a silver water jug. She is in a chic brothel – the women in the background are occupied with a customer. Is the woman washing her hands after a customer leaves, or washing them in innocence, to indicate that the sins of the world are not her responsibility? Along with Schalcken and Verkolje, Van der Neer represents the last generation of Dutch genre painters. They continued in the manner of the genre paintings of their predecessors, but placed more emphasis on refinement and elegance.

Vase of Flowers www.europeana.eu/portal/record/2021…
Compared to flower still-lifes of the early seventeenth century, this painting is a real floral explosion. Rather than a stiff bouquet, we see a colourful profusion of flowers hanging over the edge of the vase. One special detail is the reflection in the glass vase, which shows a cloudy sky through the studio window and a few objects on the windowsill. Jan Davidsz de Heem was the most influential flower painter of his day. He spent various periods in Antwerp, where he became acquainted with the effusiveness of the south.

This ceiling painting comes from a house in Leiden (Rapenburg 48) and has been hanging here since 1912. Apollo, the classical god of the arts, is depicted on the oval centrepiece. He is surrounded by his nine muses, who stand for the various artistic disciplines. The four grisailles around the centrepiece represent the elegy, the comedy, the pastoral song and the epos. In the eighteenth century, the Amsterdam artist Jacob de Wit was the leading expert in this type of illusionist tour de force.
