US laws have always been color-coded. In 2012, a white man, George Zimmerman, was able to claim self-defense after stalking and gunning down an unarmed Black teenager, Trayvon Marin. He was acquitted of murder for hunting down an innocent, unarmed Black child because he "feared for his life."

I have several photographs that have haunted me since childhood. As traumatizing as those images were, I do often wonder if my activism as an adult would have been as intense if I hadn't seen them. They did evoke such a visceral disgust that has been burning in my soul since childhood.

For sure. I had nightmare issues as a child for years because of imagery from a Holocaust documentary. In high school, some friends got hold of a VHS video compilation of real people dying, called Faces of Death. I was horrified that they could view it as entertainment.

Aloha! Yeah, for the most part. We were lucky during the last couple of storms, but Big Island and Kauai got hit. Currently, the weather has switched, and there's not a whiff of wind on my usually blustery side of the island, but the resort areas on the usually dry south side are getting soaked.
