After noting Cicero’s lost works, Petrarch laments: “The shame of failing to cultivate our own talents.” O, Petrarch, Father of Humanism, if you only knew of our destruction of books to feed LLMs, how we offload our cognition to AI, and our love of money! From the land of the living, 2026 #APEuro

I’m teaching through Unit 1 on the Renaissance in AP European History right now. Humanism is a major theme. I’m am more and more convinced that we are living through an anti-humanist age. AI being a big driver, especially with its effects on education.

Check it out! I wrote a piece about being Presbyterian in the USA. As a full-time US History teacher and part-time PC(USA) minister, I point to Frederick Douglass as a guide for thinking about the nation’s 250th anniversary even as we reject Christian nationalism.

Separation of church & state is a longstanding concern of Presbyterians in the USA, a concern predating the drafting of the Constitution. Presbyterians should reject government intrusion into religious life and attempts at establishment. This is old but worth reading: www.jstor.org/stable/23325...

Can’t sleep. So I’m reading “Unfading Light” by Sergius Bulgakov. In this extended evening, it is amusing to me that the translator says the adjective “nevechernii” translated as “unfading” literally means “no-evening.” That light is Jesus Christ.
