Went to Death Faire at The Plant in Pittsboro this weekend. Paperhand Puppet Intervention led a drum circle. Cool event showing how important it is to make space for communal grief and joy.

Feeling grateful for the landscape. @dangerwood.bsky.social got our first deer of the year and we’re trying to be more deliberate about connecting to the forest through our stomachs. Deer bone broth. Hickory nuts for banana bread. Muscadine grapes. Chicken of the woods. Beech nuts. Goldenrod tea.

Me and @dangerwood.bsky.social are scouting for remote public land in the Appalachian Mountains to hunt black bear. We’re experimenting with paddleboards for access and packing out. Hunting WNC without dogs is difficult post-Helene climate disaster, but it seems very rewarding.

I’m inspired by Brent Martin’s poems in our last episode. Our mutual friend, John Lane introduced us. I went back to John’s poems and they are so good. John was on the podcast as well, here thecampfiresedge.com/2024/09/11/e... Love that we to get to combine poetry, paranormal experience and nature
A possum prowls thick rows
of pines near the ridge of the next hill.
Then, stopped in my flashlight beam it haunches up in a small country of trees.
I click off the light and the possum, given night back like a room to enter, scuttles through the pines.
I follow into its darkness.
For miles I hear the song of its feet through dry pine, cut-over fields, a last still stream, into the first tentative lights of houses.
Then finally I stand at the edge of yards and listen as the possum rifles cans-this night and all it accommodates its only vision, and mine, as the world around us sleeps. The first shot kicks hardest.
The gun bites air, then shatters, out-fall bits of fur, small teeth, and the sun as if it was hiding there.*
Last winter, walking here at Edisto I dug half a skullcap from the tidal sand— the frontal bone, eye-ridges intact.
The bleached whole of it brown from tannin stain, buried years under water of cypress swamps.
I placed it over my ear— wanting a song in the dead long months before spring-that curve of bone held a soft roar, like a tightly cupped hand or the dull slap of sea on a turtle-haunted shore or a winter wind rattling dry palmetto fronds gathered for kindling.
