In honor of today's Nobel: throwback to the 2013 Christmas party at the department of Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet, when a hopeful young researcher joined us for the festivities!

Well, it is a local departmental thing, so it's mostly for PhD students to practice presenting, but yeah. The whole theme this year is AI, apparently. I've rebelled by paying a young artist to make some illustrations for me. Nobody is going to mistake @maxdapanda.bsky.social's work for AI slop!
Illustration of a person, deep in thought.

Days are getting shorter and colder in Norway, so with the sun out, I figured today was a good day for a ride! #motosky

Not the prettiest cell, but I'll take it: a voltage imaging recording of a striatal SST interneuron in vivo! 🧠 Now if we can pull this off with PV interneurons too, we'll really be cooking.
A red line on a graph shows intermittent spikes rising up from the baseline. The visible trace spans aapproximately five seconds.

As an aside, I'm not sure what slop machine produced this text, but 30kph is 18.6mph, not 15.5mph. I'm guessing that 15.5 is the correct number, since 25kph is the limit for e-bikes in Europe. That also matches 28mph being nearly double.
A screenshot from the linked article, claiming 30km/h equals 15.5mph.

Someone from @mathworks.bsky.social once contacted me after I ranted about Matlab, and I strongly feel that if you don't want me to get mad about Matlab, perhaps don't throw errors like "you don't have a license for the version of Matlab you're not using" at me.
A popup claiming the user is not "licensed to use R2026a", while version R2024b can be seen in the corner.

Made it to Klaipéda and the baltic sea. Tomorrow, I'll take the ferry back to Sweden. But today, I got to enjoy Curonian Spit National Park (Kuršių nerijos nacionalinis parkas), where I snapped this photo in the absolutely sweltering heat. Too bad I didn't bring my own swimming trunks!

Just walked into an old soviet nuclear missile silo, and immediately lost all cell reception. Absolutely dream location for some patch-clamp electrophysiology! 🧠

While we do most of our recordings with a 1P system, we decided to check what these dopamine axons looked like under @koenvervaeke.bsky.social's 2P microscope. Makes for a darn pretty picture!
A tangled mess of axons expressing GCaMP8s can be seen wrapping around invisible neurons in the dorsomedial striatum.

Scenes like these feel like they belong in some cute Japanese anime; but it's right here in Oslo! The lab decided to hike up Vettakollen for lunch today; it was lovely, if not a smidge warm.
View of a sunny open-air train station, with a train pulling up in the distance. There is a blue sky with a single cloud visible in the distance, and plenty of green everywhere. A traintrack with a train on it, viewed from an elevated position. There are trees on both sides of the track, and a red house to the left of it. In the far distance, hills and a fjord can just be seen over the trees.

Happy #FluorescenceFriday! When investigating striatal cholinergic neurons, it's a good idea to check what dopamine is doing. So, @livija-sarauskyte.bsky.social put an axon-expressing GCaMP8s in midbrain dopamine neurons, and imaged dorsal striatum during a simple task. So much going on! 🧠

Weirdest thing happened recently: a new #Hamilton syringe cracked and broke (top). I had never seen this before, so I emailed them about it. A week later, a brand new one unexpectedly showed up! Now that's the kind of customer service that makes me happy to buy from them again.
Two glass nanosyringes. The top one has a visible crack near the right end, the bottom one is pristine.

This is such a common occurrence in neuroscience, I learned about it as a trope in undergrad. Heck, @xkcd.com made a brilliant comic about it!
If you need some help with the math, let me know, but that should be enough to get you started! Huh? No, I don't need to read your thesis, I can imagine roughly what it says.

It is insane; prices for hard drives literally doubled in a year. I get why dropbox and alike are upping their prices, but we're left with essentially no affordable options...

Quick PSA: while they taste the same, a 147Ω and a 10MΩ resistor are not, in fact, interchangeable. You know, if like me, you were wondering why your circuit wasn't working.
